Ismael Barroso Career Breakdown

Ismael Barroso is a 41-year-old from Venezuela with a professional fight record of 25-4-2.

It’s fair to say the Venezuelan is in the twilight of his career. But his recent performances have at times defied his age.

Barroso has one defeat in his last six fights. That loss came against Rolando Romero and was for the vacant WBA super lightweight title. Romero ended the contest by TKO in the ninth round.

Not to be deterred, Barroso bounced back with a win. In his most recent fight, Barroso won the interim WBA super lightweight title with a TKO win over Ohara Davies in Nevada last January.

Overall, Barroso has won 23 of his fights by knockout. His other two wins came by decision. Three of his four losses have come by KO, with one on the scorecards. He also has two draws on his fight Resume.

A southpaw with a 69.5-inch reach, Barroso is renowned for his fast starts. His style was never better highlighted than during his WBA interim lightweight title win over Kevin Mitchell in London in 2015.

Barroso went out fast and furious against Mitchell, leaving the Englishman needing oxygen after the referee ended the fight in the fifth. Barroso tried the same tactic in his next fight, this time against Anthony Crolla for the WBA lightweight title.

Crolla had clearly watched Barroso’s fight with Mitchell and done his homework. The Englishman covered up and absorbed the early onslaught from Barroso, who subsequently ran out of gas and was finished by round 7.

At 41 years of age, that would be a risky tactic to employ against a younger opponent like Hiraoka.

Andy Hiraoka Career Breakdown

Andy Hiraoka has a professional boxing record of 23-0.

The 28-year-old Japanese fights from a southpaw stance. He has won 18 of his 23 fights by KO with only five going the distance.

His last nine fights have all been won by TKO, with the most recent a win over Sebastian Diaz Maldanado in Tokyo last December. On that occasion, the fight ended in the fifth round.

Hiraoka is ranked No.6 by the WBA, and No.12 by the IBF, in the 140-pound division. He has a knockout win percentage of 78.

His fight Resume doesn’t boast the same quality opposition as Barroso. He has also only fought outside of his native Japan twice. However, that won’t be a problem with this fight in Tokyo.

Ismael Barroso vs. Andy Hiraoka Betting Picks and Predictions

Andy Hiraoka is a heavy favorite to win this fight. He is the taller man by three inches, with a five-inch reach advantage. Hiraoka also has a 13-year advantage over his opponent.

What Ismael Barroso brings to the table is plenty of experience. Not only has he fought more times than Hiraoka, but he also has experience fighting around the world and for world titles.

Barroso fought for a world title in May 2023. He wouldn’t be getting those shots if he was too far over the hill.

He won’t be phased by the home crowd either. His controversial defeat to Rolando Romero came in the American’s home state of Nevada, and his WBA interim lightweight title win over Kevin Mitchell came in the Londoner's backyard.

Even in his defeat to Anthony Crolla, he fought the Brit in his home city of Manchester. It would be ridiculous to write off the Venezuelan.

We really are tempted to go for Barroso to win. The odds are in his favor, and he has the experience to do it. The only problem we have is the size and age difference.

We do say the odds should be closer than they are. So given that, we think Barroso is overpriced and is worth a wager.

Ismael Barroso to beat Andy Hiraoka is our betting pick.
