Naoya Inoue heavily favored to stop TJ Doheny in Tokyo showdown

Naoya Inoue is back in the ring in September. The undisputed super-bantamweight world champion will take on TJ Doheny in Tokyo, with the champion a massive odds-on favorite to win the fight at -5000. Naoya Inoue is a two-weight undisputed champion. He is regarded as a generational fighter, who alongside Terence Crawford and Oleksandr Usyk, is the only male boxer to be an undisputed champion in two weight classes during the four-belt era.

Inoue was expected to be fighting the IBF mandatory challenger Sam Goodman.

But in a recent interim fight against Chainoi Worawut in July, Goodman suffered a hand injury during his unanimous decision victory.

The injury rules Goodman out of the fight with Inoue, and as a result, TJ Doheny has stepped in to fill the September 3rd date in Tokyo.

The decision to fight Doheny hasn’t gone down well with everybody. Matchroom chief Eddie Hearn has been quick to criticize, branding the fight a mismatch.

Hearn is also the promoter of WBA No.1 Murodjon Akhmadaliev. He has accused Inoue of ducking the fight with his man, as well as making his feelings clear on his social media.

Regardless of what Hearn thinks, the fight between Inoue and Doheny is going ahead. So let’s see what the bookmakers think.

In his most recent fight, Inoue beat Luis Nery by KO. The champion ended the scrap in the 6th round, with the referee waving off the contest after Inoue floored the mandatory challenger for a third time.

TJ Doheny is an Irish fighter with a professional boxing record of 26-4.

The 37-year-old Irishman has won 20 of his fights by knockout, with the other six coming by decision.

He has a knockout-to-win percentage of 76.92. And with his explosive punching power, he is a real entertainer who will have fight fans on the edge of their seats.

Doheny is on a three-fight winning streak. His last three fights have all taken place in Tokyo, making him a familiar face to Japanese fight fans.

His most recent victory came against Bryl Bayogos in Tokyo in May. The Irishman won that fight with a 4th-round TKO.
