The state of South Dakota isnā€™t a huge sports hub as they donā€™t have any home state collegiate or professional team to root for. They do flock to neighboring states like Minnesota, where many South Dakotans are loyal. The lack of sports teams in the state made lawmakers indifferent at first to the overturning of PASPA in 2018.

South Dakota Sports Betting Timeline

South Dakota has had an interesting journey when it comes to sports betting, which we'll run through here.

Sports Betting Referendum Legalization 2019-2021

Voters inĀ South DakotaĀ approved a referendumĀ that legalized sports betting in one area of South Dakota: Deadwood. Bill SJR 501 will add sports betting to the list of games that are licensed and operate in Deadwood, which is surprising as a similar bill was hastily dismissed in 2019.

Sports betting legalization in South DakotaĀ was approved by residents in November 2020.Ā  The lawmakers will have to work on some regulation and licensing and we could potentially see sports bettingĀ up and running in South Dakota in 2021.

Casinos and Land-Based Gambling

South Dakota has one of the smallest populations in the country, yet has plenty of casinos, a lot of them in fact. They have 31Ā casinos, which is high, for their citizens to casino ratio. ElevenĀ of the casinos are owned and operated by the local tribes, and they are all evenly distributed around the state.

Racetracks are sprinkled around the state as well, they have state-licensed tracks that offer electronic gaming options, like Simulcast horse racing betting and more.

Many sports bettors have been flocking across state lines to Grand Falls Casino in Iowa, which means that money that could be benefiting the state of South Dakota is funding another stateā€™s economy.

Legalizing sports betting in just Deadwood wonā€™t change this either, as Deadwood is on the opposite side of the state, six hours away. They will need to legalize statewide, offer mobile gaming or set up another sports betting hotspot in the Sioux Falls area.
