WNBA 2022 Title Betting Picks

We're almost halfway through the WNBA's 36-game regular-season schedule. Now feels like the perfect time to re-visit WNBA championship futures, which is exactly what we're doing in this article. You'll want to read this article through to get our updated pick to win the 2022 WNBA title!

2022 WNBA Season Recap

Let's recap the 2022 WNBA season, shall we? After all, there's a large enough sample size of games already played that can help dictate our futures pick.

The Las Vegas Aces have been the runaway best team so far. They currently possess the best record in the league at 13-3. The Aces have lived up to its preseason championship aspirations (Las Vegas was +375 to win the title in the preseason, which was second-best at the time). The team is made up of three potential All-Stars and an MVP favorite, A'Ja Wilson.

Not far behind the Aces are the Connecticut Sun, who opened the season as slight championship favorites over the Aces. The Suns are 12-5 so far. These two top teams have played one another on two occasions already. First, Las Vegas won 89-81, but then Connecticut won the immediate follow-up 97-90. Both games took place on the Aces' home floor, though, which should only give the Suns more confidence if they can host them later on.

Rounding out the WNBA standings are Chicago Sky (10-5; third place), Seattle Storm (10-6; fourth), and Washington Mystics (11-7; fifth). Eight teams will advance to the WNBA Playoffs only, a new wrinkle to the rulebook introduced this year for the first time ever. Teams will have to survive a best-of-three first round, followed by a pair of best-of-five series to become WNBA champions.

The current WNBA betting odds for the championship largely reflect the season standings. Here's which teams the top online bookmakers are currently ear-marking as title favorites:

2022 WNBA Championship Betting Pick

A winning betting strategy in this 2022 WNBA championship futures bet is to NOT "put all your eggs in one basket." We get it, it's a mental hurdle to bet on two (or three) different teams since at least one of those bets is a guaranteed loser. However, it's a hedge against bad luck or a stunning upset. What if a team's best player gets seriously hurt in the first game of the playoffs? If you only have one bet on that team, well, you're essentially screwed. That's why it's smart to bet at least two different ways, which is what we're doing. Here are those two teams we're backing:

Las Vegas Aces

As we write this, the Aces just blew a 28-point lead to the Sky. This mark's the biggest comeback in WNBA history. It's an ugly stain on an otherwise unblemished season. But we're going to overlook that choke job loss and double down on Las Vegas as our main WNBA championship pick.

Our confidence comes in the Aces' starting five, which we would argue is the best in the league. Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young, and the aforementioned Wilson are all All-Star players. And we know basketball, whether it's the men's or women's game, is a player-dominated sport. Las Vegas has three players it can trust to take over games, which counts for a lot in our book.

The Aces will rematch the Sky in next month's Commissioner's Cup. If anything, we'd bet that their recent loss to them in epic fashion is the "wake-up call" it sorely needed after cruising through the first half of the year. Don't let one bad result scare you away from taking Las Vegas here.

Seattle Storm

Alright, we're not going to understate this: a wager on the Storm is a risk. That's because this team just can't stay healthy. The risk is reflected in the team's rather long +600 odds. But as a secondary bet, we think Seattle is worth a serious look here.

Sue Bird's worst-kept secret, that 2022 is her final hoorah, was finally let out of the bag by the WNBA legend herself. Obviously, the Storm giving her a title for a swan song is a juicy storyline, one that certainly has merit, but there's a bigger story brewing underneath that'll impact Seattle's title chances just as much.

The story is what the heck is going on with Mercedes Russell? The team's starting center has played just five games this season. An unspecified injury has kept her out of the lineup the whole season and there's no timetable on her return, if ever. But if the Storm is going to contend, they need a healthy Russell in the lineup. Her 6-foot-6 frame can match up inside against top low-post players, which the team will inevitably cross come playoff time.

Still, Seattle is worth a risk here. If they can get healthy, this team has the potential to make noise come playoff time. Certainly, they'll be highly motivated with Bird retiring at year's end.
