Two massive title fights headline the UFC 283 card from Rio de Janeiro On January 21. For an in-depth look at each bout, plus our betting predictions, read this right away. This is mandatory reading for UFC 283 betting!
Glover Teixeira vs. Jamahal Hill Betting Pick
The vacant light heavyweight title will be on the line in this “weird” matchup. Weird because Hill is only the seventh-ranked fighter in the division — an undeserving position to be in. Yet despite that, top UFC betting sites have marked Hill as the betting favorite over Teixeira, who was the title holder in early 2022. Here are the latest UFC 283 betting odds:
Teixeira was originally scheduled to face Jiri Prochazka for the belt — the same fighter that snatched the championship from him in an all-time classic fight. Prochazka, however, was injured and forced to vacate the title. Not only that, but another division fight between Jan Blachowicz and Magomed Ankalaev ended in a draw. All those wacky events forced this main event, which conveniently takes places place in Teixeira's home country.
It’s a true clash of styles between Teixeira and Hill. The former is, unsurprisingly, a jiu-Jitsu specialist like the Brazilians before him. Sans Paul Craig, no one in the weight class can out-grapple Teixeira. We specifically mention Craig because Hill’s lone career loss (in mid-2021) came at the hands of Craig. But since then, Hill has rallied off three straight knockout wins. Hill will have a clear upper hand when it comes to striking in this bout, hence why he’s called “Sweet Dreams.”
We also have to mention that Teixeira is 43 and Hill is 31. Not only that, but Teixeira took a physical beating from Prochazka last time out. Don’t overlook that. At Teixeira’s age, it’s harder for the body to put those lickings behind. That’s why we’re betting that Hill stuns Teixeira with an early-knockout win. Stopping him with his hands is the only real path to victory for Hill in this one so we fully expect him to be aggressive out of the gate. That aggression leads to a Hill KO win, bank on it!
Deiveson Figueiredo vs Brandon Moreno Betting Pick
Four-fight series are incredibly rare in MMA — so rare that it’s never happened in UFC history. That is, until UFC 283. Figueiredo and Moreno will make history with a fourth fight (in two years) in the co-main event. The first bout ended in a draw, Moreno won the next, and Figueiredo took the last. That’s why it comes as zero surprise that the decisive Figueiredo-Moreno fight is currently a betting toss-up. Here are the odds:
Figueiredo is the tiniest of betting favorites and likely should be. For one, he enters the fight as the flyweight champion (Moreno is the interim title-holder). He won the belt with a unanimous decision victory over Moreno in January 2022. But Figueiredo’s biggest advantage is likely the partisan Rio de Janeiro crowd. Of course, Figueiredo is Brazilian and will have the full support of the crowd for once in this series.
Based on the paragraph above, you might think Figueiredo has a “stacked deck” per se. That wouldn’t be accurate. He does have one disadvantage and it’s a biggie: Figueiredo hasn’t fought in a year. Part of his layoff is due to injury (both hands and a knee), but also a contract dispute with Dana White and the company. That ring rust could be play a factor, especially with Figueiredo being 35 years of age, a time when most fighters are already naturally declining.
Moreno fought once since the close loss to Figueiredo. Back in July, Moreno pieced up Kai Kara-France to claim the interim belt. That was no gimme fight either and Moreno impressed. Not only did he show his thunderous power, but Moreno’s chin was also sharpened. Kara-France landed big some big shots to no avail. In the end, Moreno scored the -round knockout.
This isn’t an easy UFC 283 pick, but Moreno is getting our money here. While we have doubts Figueiredo will enter the octagon in peak condition, we have no such worries about Moreno. He’s proven to be a fighter that constantly improves from fight to fight and we’re of the belief Moreno is bringing his best to Brazil. If so, that’s a fighter worth backing with a bet.
