Islam Makhachev vs. Dustin Poirier Betting Pick
This lightweight title matchup is days away at UFC 302. If oddsmakers are to be believed, this fight is Makhachev’s fight to lose. He’s a staggering favorite over Poirier across the top UFC betting sites. Here’s how those sites have the Makhachev-Poirier odds are being pegged:
This is Makhachev’s first title defense against a real lightweight. He’s defended the belt twice, but that was against a featherweight in Alexander Volkanovski. On the flip side, this might be Poirier’s last title shot. He’s 35 years old and lost his two other title chances. So it’s really now or never for Poirier.
Those two past title losses for Poirier weigh heavy here. That’s because he was submitted twice by grappling experts — Khabib Nurmagomedov and Charles Oliveira. The ground game has proven to be Poirier’s weakness and unfortunately for him, that’s Makhachev’s exact fight style. He’s essentially Khabib 2.0 and given how badly an in-his-prime Poirier fared against Nurmagomedov, that explains the lopsided betting line.
We think Makhachev wins this fight with ease. His wrestling truly is special. Poirier’s takedown defense is ok (63 percent), but that’s not good enough to snuff out Makhachev’s takedown attempts. And even worse, once on the ground, it’s hard to get out of Makhachev’s control. We predict Makhachev will wear out Poirier with wrestling before making him submit mid-fight.
For bettors looking for more value, perhaps hit the prop market on this bout. If you can get an exact outcome prop, lay the hammer on Makhachev by submission. We sense deja vu for Poirier in another title fight.
Conor McGregor vs. Michael Chandler Betting Pick
This is the most high-profile matchup the UFC will have all year all because it’s the return of “Mystic Mac.” After a three-year layoff, McGregor is back for UFC 304 and is the favorite to beat Chandler. Here’s how the odds are shaking out:
We’ll be completely upfront and say we’re fading McGregor. Honestly, we’re shocked he’s favored to win. At this point in his career, his star power exceeds his fighting ability. McGregor is 35. He’s coming off a three-year layoff due to a nasty leg break. He’s won one fight since 2016. He’s made hundreds of millions outside of the UFC. All this is to say, McGregor is a shell of the guy who dominated the sport eight years ago.
At first glance, one could argue Chandler is also past his peak. He’s older at 38 years old and has been inactive the past 18 months waiting for this bout and the big payday that comes with it. Chandler has also lost three of his last four, albeit in competitive fashion (unlike McGregor).
However, we’re sticking to our guns here. Chandler still has that “dog” in him. We’re so confident in him winning that we advise “sizing up” on this bet. If you usually bet one unit per fight, consider doubling it because bets this mispriced are hard to come by. When you see an opportunity like you do now, you take a bigger swing and live with the outcome — which we fully believe will be a positive one if betting Chandler.
Belal Muhammad vs. Leon Edwards Betting Pick
This welterweight championship bout was just announced for UFC 305. As it stands, the reigning champion, Edwards, is a comfy favorite to top Muhammad:
These two have squared off in the octagon before. Back in 2021, these two went at it for two rounds. However, it was ruled a no contest when Muhammad was nastily poked in the eye and couldn’t recover. Since then, neither man has lost — going a combined 9-0. So this is truly a clash of the best welterweights the sport has to offer.
We see Edwards winning this title fight. On the feet, he’s the far better striker. Muhammad is a wrestler through and through, but Edwards is elite at defending the takedown. If the takedown isn’t there for Muhammad, there’s a slim to none chance of him winning. We got the champion retaining here.
