The best online sportsbooks for tennis betting have temporarily taken down odds on who the outright tourney winner will be. Only individual match bets are currently available, but we expect that to change sooner rather than later. 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters Recap
Fifty-six players were part of the initial Monte-Carlo draw (on the singles side), meaning more than two-thirds of the field has already been eliminated. Therefore, we should probably recap what’s happened at the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters before we go any further.
First thing is first, many top names skipped out on the competition entirely. Rafael Nadal, an 11-time champion here, was one of those. He chose to recover from injured ribs rather than go for a 12th title (Nadal already holds the event record anyway). Other players that joined Nadal on the not-participating list included Matteo Berrettini, Daniil Medvedev, and Dominic Thiem.
While those big names skipped out, one major star returned to action — the number-one ranked Novak Djokovic. A refusal to take the COVID-19 vaccine forced Djokovic to miss ATP action since February. But with the season back in Europe, Djokovic has returned to the mix. Only in Monte Carlo, it was a brief stint as Djokovic was bounced in his first and only match in the round of 32. The 46th-ranked Alejandro Davidovich Fokina pulled off the upset with a 6-3, 6-7, 6-1 win. It’s painfully obvious that Djokovic was affected by “rust” and it’ll take more time to get back into playing rhythm.
Djokovic going down so early was the big shock of the tournament so far, but it hasn’t been the single shocker. Also suffering an upset in the round of 32 was Felix Auger-Aliassime. The crazy part here was that Auger-Aliassime — the No. 9-ranked player — wasn’t even competitive. He dropped two straight sets to Lorenzo Musetti (ranked No. 83 for comparison sake). With the defeat, Auger-Aliassime has just one win over his last four tournaments.
But enough about who is no longer playing at Monte Carlo, let’s turn our attention to the final 16 players that remain in contention. We’ll cover who our best bets to "run the table" are next.
2022 Monte-Carlo Masters Betting Picks
There are plenty of players left in the bracket that could be good betting picks to win the 2022 Monte-Carlo Masters. But our job is to whittle down the bracket to find the VERY best betting picks — the ones most worth your hard-earned money. We think we’ve found them below:
Casper Rudd
We’ve neglected to mention that Monte Carlos features clay courts. Therefore, it would be smart of us to bet on players with a record of success on the surface. The first that pops to mind is Casper Rudd, who is hanging on to a fourth seed in the bracket. Rudd has six career wins on clay courts. That doesn’t include a title at the Monte-Carlos Masters, however, he did reach the semi-finals here a year ago.
Not only does Rudd have that going for him, but he’s also riding a lot of momentum. For the first time in his career, he reached the finals of a Masters 1000 event, doing so two weeks ago in Miami. Don’t overlook the role of mental confidence in not just tennis, but any sport. Backing a player and/or team that's high in confidence is an underrated betting strategy of ours, which we believe will pay dividends here with Rudd.
Stefanos Tsitsipas
Speaking of confidence, Tsitsipas should have an abundance of it himself. He is, after all, the reigning champion of this event (Tsitsipas toppled Rublev in the 2022 finale). And he started the 2022 event with a bang too. In the round of 32, he smoked the 2019 event champion, Fabio Fognini, with straight sets of 6-3.
Beyond his success at Monte Carlo, Tsitsipas is off to a high start in 2022. No, he hasn’t won any event, but he’s seemingly always in the thick of it. At the Australian Open, he ended up in the final four. Then at Rotterdam, Tsitsipas made the finals. Tsitsipas is on the cusp of breaking through, and we’re betting it happens in Monte-Carlo. With so many big names out, there’s a clear path to victory for Tsitsipas to repeat as champion.
