Best Bets in US Open's Men's Bracket

Novak Djokovic (+125)

It may not look like Novak Djokovic is laying great value at first glance.

A one-to-one payout isn't anything special or particularly lucrative. Then again, the context of his odds matter. He is so dominant that you're almost fortunate to pick him up at more than even money.

Djokovic has won four of the past five major tournaments, including last year's US Open against Juan Martin del Potro. His service and forehand games remain unparalleled, and he's displayed a certain resilience we haven't necessarily seen from in previous moments.

Take his victory over Roger Federer at Wimbledon in July. He looked primed to self-destruct, but he pulled himself up from a huge deficit, despite overwhelming support from the crowd for Federer. The match lasted almost five hours, and he was able to walk away with a victory.

It would be fair to argue that he will face no greater challenge in Flushing this month. Neither Federer nor Rafael Nadal (at least on hard courts) are the forces they were a few years ago, and it's difficult to buy del Potro, Alexander Zverev or Dominic Theim as similarly imposing threats at the moment.

Roger Federer (+750)

A lot of people are going to disagree with this designation for Federer. He's laying fringe-favorite odds yet enters match play as a noted underdog.

Age is always the concern with him. He just turned 38. He also hasn't fared too well in recent Opens. His last finals appearance came in 2009, and he was bounced from the fourth round last year.

Still, his perseverance through Wimbledon stands out. He continues to have epic offensive weapons in his arsenal, and with the men's field begging for a neck-and-neck rival to Djokovic, the graying Federer is the closest we get to a potential equal.

Dominic Thiem (+2500)

This spot belongs to Dominic Thiem. He has more than earned the benefit of the doubt by this point.

Not only is he among the most physically conditioned players in the game, but he's become a mainstay in the top-five rankings.

If nothing else, he's worth an investment because he's the only entrant to have beaten all three of Djokovic, Nadal and Federer this year alone.

US Open Men's Winner Prediction

Going against the grain doesn't make too much sense here. The pick has to be Novak Djokovic.

His reign now is starting to feel eerily like Federer's between 2004 and 2008.

He doesn't have the same sense of inevitability, but he's getting there. And his play over the past few months speaks for itself. He's the most dominant player we've seen since prime Fed.

Best Bets in US Open's Women's Bracket

Naomi Osaka (+800)

Jumping on Naomi Osaka's odds is too enticing to pass up right now. Line-setters have her as a borderline underdog, even though she enters as the top ranked woman in the world. Talk about bizarre.

Never mind that there are veterans who might be intriguing. The eight-to-one return on Osaka's place is golden. Remember: It was her who took down Serena Williams in last year's final. Her game has only evolved since then.

She is even more consistent and has taken down some of the biggest names in the sport over the past year.

Serena Williams (+350)

Serena Williams continues to deserve this level of respect. Is she as much of a sure thing as she was a couple of years ago? Not even close.

Williams has made it to three finals in the six majors she's played since returning after the birth of her child, but she's been unable to win any of them. There have also been a few instances in which she's needed to pull out early from tournaments.

But Williams is still the greatest of all time. Even her quasi-peak is better than the absolute apex of 99.9 percent of the field.

At the very least, Willaims feels like a bankable Finals bet. She's been to four of the past seven US Open championship rounds and won three of those matchups. Her last victory came in 2014, but again: She's still Serena.

US Open Women's Winner Prediction

Get ready for a boring pick, because we're going with Osaka.

Taking a flier on Williams or Simona Halep is perfectly fine. But the current odds Osaka is laying continue to tantalize. She has been the most exceptional women's tennis player in the world for roughly a year.

We tend to steer away from predicting too many repeat champions, but at a +800, it's hard for us to go with anyone else.
