2021 U.S. Open Men's Prediction
The men's field at the 2021 U.S. Open is either priming us for a bunch of surprises or a mostly non-eventful run. Not only is the reigning champion, Dominic Thiem, unable to participate due to a wrist injury, but both superstars Rafael Nadal, who won the 2019 U.S. Open, and Roger Federer, who once won five straight U.S. Open titles, won't be in the bracket either thanks to injuries of their own.
This seemingly paves the way for Novak Djokovic (-150) to win it all—and do so rather easily. He hasn't historically been a no-brainer pick at the U.S. Open during his time as the world's No. 1. He has three title to his resume—2011, 2015, 2018—but has never won back-to-back championships and has suffered many unexpected upsets.
Again: This year might be wildly different. Oddsmakers have pegged his greatest challengers as Daniil Medvedev (+400), Alex Zverev (+550) and Stefanos Tsitsipas (+800). No one else has even been billed as a remote option. The fifth-best betting odds belong to Matteo Berrettini (+2500), and he's laying 25-to-1.
Seeing someone so heavily favored this early into the equation is borderline unprecedented. Even prime Federer used to have more than a couple of opponents inside 10-to-1 territory. Djokovic isn't just a favorite; he's essentially the only viable outright pick at this juncture.
Far be it from us to shirk that trend. He's currently landing 65 percent of all his monster first serves and wins those first serves 75 percent of the time. Maybe an Andy Murray (+6600) or Nick Kyrgios (+8000) sneaks themselves into this discussion if they get hot, but for now, we don't see a realistic path to anyone upsetting the world's No. 1.
OSB U.S. Open Men's Prediction: Novak Djokovic (-150)
2021 U.S. Open Women's Prediction
Figuring out the women's bracket at the U.S. Open is a far more interesting proposition. Ashleigh Barty (+350), the world's current No. 1, is pegged as the favorite, but she's paying out far more than even money.
And whereas the men have just four total players laying better than +2000 lines, the women's bracket has eight names in that territory on top of Barty: reigning champion Naomi Osaka (+500), Aryna Sabalenka (+900), Serena Williams (+900), Bianca Andreescu (+1200), Iga Swiatek (+1200), Cori Gauff (+1600), Karolina Pliskova (+1600) and Simona Halep (+1600).
Many bettors like to gravitate towards the reigning women's champion, which would be Osaka in this case. That's not a bad bet. But she has not been at the top of her game this season, largley becauase she's battling stress and anxiety by her own admission. We don't dissuade you from picking her; she is the future of tennis. But there is a risk.
Rolling with Barty is of course perfectly fine. She has earned the world's top spot, winning over 81 percent of her service games. You won't catch any flak from us if you want to invest in the greatest of all time, Serena Williams, either.
For our money, though, we are incredibly intrigued by Gauff. She can be a little erratic, which accounts for her No. 22 world ranking. But she's starting to pick up her play of late. She's now dropping in more than 60 percent of her first serves and winning nearly 67 percent of all her service games. Oddsmakers have touted her as a dark horse-candidate. We believe she's something much more dangerous.
OSB U.S. Open Women's Prediction: Cori Gauff (+1600)
