The Monte Carlo Quarterfinals begin on Friday and we have an intriguing matchup in the last eight between Stefanos Tsitsipas and Karen Khachanov, two players who have looked very solid so far in this ATP event. The Greek made quick work of Alexander Zverev in the Round of 16, beating the German in straight sets, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). As for Khachanov, he took out fellow Russian Daniil Medvedev, 6-3, 7-5, one of his most impressive wins of the season thus far. This should be an entertaining match here. Tsitsipas vs Khachanov Odds
Tsitsipas is the clear favorite here with -195 odds to win outright. Khachanov comes back at +160. Head-to-head meetings between these two have definitely favored Tsitsipas, who is 7-1 all-time against his quarterfinal opponent. Their most recent clash was in the Paris Masters last year where the Greek star beat Khachanov in straight sets.
Mixed Bag so Far This Season For Tsitsipas
Currently the No. 12 ranked player in the world, Tsitsipas hasn't been playing that great to begin the 2024 season. He only made the Round of 16 at the first Major of the year in Melbourne while failing to win a single title on the Tour so far in five tournaments. His best finish came in Los Cabos, losing to Norwegian Casper Ruud in the semifinals down in Mexico.
That being said, Tsitsipas has performed well at Monte Carlo and looks to be in line for a deep run. While he had a walkover in the Round of 64, Tsitsipas didn't have it easy in the Round of 32 against Argentine Tomas Etcheverry. But, he dominated him, winning 6-1, 6-0. Zverev was an even tougher task on Thursday but again Tsitsipas rolled in and controlled the match from the get-go. Although it took a tiebreaker to win the second set, Tsitsipas looked great. He blew a 5-0 lead but overcame his struggles to take down Zverev.
Tsitsipas is fantastic on clay courts, especially in Monte Carlo. He's won this tournament twice in 2021 and 2022 and could make it three this weekend. First, though, the focus will be on getting past Khachanov, a guy who has shown lots of promise in the past. Tsitsipas won't be taking the Russian for granted by any means.
Khachanov Having Respectable Season
Khachanov is a relatively well-known name on the ATP Tour and currently holds the No. 17 ranking in the world. The Russian, who resides in Dubai, has one title this year, winning the ATP 250 event in Doha back in February where he beat Jakub Mensik in the final. At the Australian Open, he lost to eventual winner Jannik Sinner in the Round of 16, who was red-hot at the time. Other than the Doha showing, Khachanov also made the semis in Marseille.
The 27-year-old didn't exactly face easy opponents in Monte Carlo up to this point. He had to take down Cam Norrie, Francisco Cerundolo, and most notably, Medvedev on Thursday. That victory in itself will have Khachanov feeling extremely confident. While Medvedev's eight double faults certainly didn't help his case, Khachanov did play well and showed why he's still one of the top 20 players in the world. He also tends to turn up on clay courts while Medvedev has openly said he's not a fan of the clay surfaces.
This will be a tall task for Khachanov, however. His only win over Tsitsipas came in the Round of 16 in the Miami tournament last year. A lot of their battles have been close contests though, so it could really go either way. As previously mentioned, taking out a player of Medvedev's stature will have Khachanov marching into this march with his head held high. There's no question about it.
Stefanos Tsitsipas vs Karen Khachanov picks
It's difficult to look past the history. For that reason alone, I have to go with Tsitsipas, who is playing some of his best tennis of the season at the moment. The moneyline looks good for the Greek on Friday.
