The world's top player will be looking to lead Italy to a successful defense of their Davis Cup title. However, World No. 1 Jannik Sinner can expect stiff competition for the crown from host nation Spain. Not only does World No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz play for the Spaniards, but they can also draw inspiration from the fact that Spanish tennis legend Rafael Nadal is playing his farewell tennis competition in this event.

Nonetheless, oddsmakers are leaning toward the reigning title holders in the the tennis odds. Italy is set as the +160 choice in Davis Cup odds. Spain is a close second in the tennis picks at a betting line of +185.

Italians Seeking To Hold Davis Cup Serve

Italy displayed plenty of resiliance in winning last year's Davis Cup title. In both the quarter-final and semifinal, the Italians fell behind 1-0. Facing elimination, Sinner won the second match to spark 2-1 comeback wins. Especially impressive was his victory over Novak Djokovic in the semifinal against Serbia.

As powerful a presence as the World No. 1 Sinner gives the Italian lineup, he's not their only key player. The doubles team of Andrea Vavassori and Simone Bolelli played in the ATP Finals. They are 18-7 on hard-court surfaces this year, the type of surface upon with the Davis Cup is being contested.

Spaniards Searching For Cinderella Finish

Certainly, the quality of Alcaraz and Nadal is giving Spain a dynamic 1-2 punch. It's difficult to imagine both of them losing singles matches against the same country. On home court, with the support of a raucous pro-Spain crowd, it could prove a difference maker. The last time Spain won the Davis Cup in 2019, Nadal was MVP.

And there's a deep bench behind the two Spanish superstars. Pedro Martinez is ranked No. 42 in the world, while Roberto Bautista Agut comes in at No. 46.

Americans Serving up Deep Squad

There's been a record 32 Davis Cup titles won by the USA, but none since 2007. However, they've got a solid squad coming to Malaga this year.

World No. 5 Taylor Fritz can beat any player when he's on his game. Tommy Paul is ranked No. 12 by the ATP. And World No. 21 Ben Shelton is capable of overpowering opponents with his massive serve.

Aussies Hoping To Be Third-Time Lucky

Australia got to last year's Davis Cup final and lost 2-0 to Italy. The Aussies were also losing finalists in 2022, going down 2-0 against Canada.

Will it be third-time lucky? Well, to do so, it will likely be without their best player. Alex de Minaur is struggling with an ongoing left hip ailment that was proving problematic for him in the ATP Finals. He cited it as a borderline miracle that he was able to play in that event.

In his place, the Australians will be counting on Alexei Popyrin (No. 24 in the ATP world rankings) and Jordan Thompson (No. 26). Australia has won 28 Davis Cup titles, second only to the USA, but none since 2003.

Canada A Battle-Tested Squad

When Canada won the 2022 Davis Cup, it was with Felix Auger-Alliassime and Denis Shapovalov. Auger-Alliassime  is passing on this year's tournament, but Shapovalov is coming in off a big win earlier this month on the ATP Tour in Belgrade.

He'll be backed by a couple of veterans of Canadian tennis. Milos Raonic was once No. 3 in the world and played in the Wimbledon final. Vasek Pospisil won the men's doubles at Wimbledon in 2014. He was ranked as high as No. 3 in doubles by the ATP Tour.

And The Winner Is . . .

Who wouldn't love to see a magical send off for the legend that is Nadal? Yet as much as Rafa will be the story of this Davis Cup, if the form charts hold and it's an Italy vs Spain final, the outcome most likely will rest upon the result of the singles match between Sinner and Alcaraz. The Spaniard is 6-4 all-time vs the Italian, including a 3-0 mark in matches this year.

Sinner was the star for Italy in last year's title run. He was 5-0 in knockout stage matches. Twice he won with the Italians facing elimination. If the world No. 1 is on his game like that again, Italy will defend the country's Davis Cup title.
