The WTT Contender Almaty 2022 competition is in full flow. The current event from Kazakhstan is one of a series of Table Tennis competitions, organized by World Table Tennis, and is part of the WTT Contender Series.

The current Contender’s competition started on 13th September, and finishes on Sunday September 18th. It’s being held in Almaty, a city in Kazakhstan. The following event is the Nova Gorcia, hosted by Slovenia, starting on 31st October.

The Contender events are short and sweet, designed to not drag on, to make them more appealing to fans and broadcasters. But even though they are growing in stature, the Contender events still don’t seem as popular as the Russian and Czech pro leagues.

But it’s early days, and as the sport evolves to try and draw a new audience, it will in turn make them all more professional, which will have a snowball effect, and attract more players, more nations, more sponsors, etc.

WTT Contender Almaty 2022

So far in Almaty the competition is at the Round of 16 stage. Making picks on these matches on the Moneyline can be difficult. For example, in the match between Lin Yun-Ju and Fanbo Meng, Lin is -1800 to win.

On the handicap, Lin is -138 giving away a start of 2.5 games. On the same market, Fanbo is +100 (with a 2.5 game start). In the total points betting, the spread is set at 59.5, with -120 available on both sides of the bet.

  • What; WTT Contender Almaty 2022
  • Where; Almaty, Kazakhstan
  • When; Tuesday, September 13th, 2022 - Sunday, September 18th, 2022

All the other seven men’s Round of 16 matches look competitive, though, so they have better value on the Moneyline.

One such option is the match involving Woojin Jang and Tiago Apolonia. Jang is -350 on the Moneyline, with Jang at +250. Those odds look a bit harsh on Apolonia, so I’m happy to back him on the handicap at +100 with a +1.5 game start.

There are more matches to follow. The quarter-finals and semi-finals of both the men’s and women’s events take place on Saturday, September 17th, with all the finals taking place on Sunday, September 18th.

There are also men’s and women’s doubles events and a mixed doubles competition. Matches are taking place pretty much all day, so there is plenty of action to follow over a remaining couple of days of the event.

About Table Tennis Betting

As Table Tennis is becoming a more popular sport and has regular competitions, online sportsbooks are getting more interesting. Similar to esports, there are markets with table tennis betting odds on matches nearly every day, but also, like esports, it can be hard to find outright winner betting markets.

Popular match markets include the usual standard markets American’s like to wager on.

  • Moneyline - A bet on who wins the match
  • Handicap - One player is given the advantage of a game to make the odds level on both sides of the bet
  • Total Points - The number of points scored in the match, on the whole, you decide if it will be over or under the spread

Alternative markets on Table Tennis include bets on:-

  • Who will win the first game
  • Total Points in the first game
  • Handicap market on who will win the first game

These betting markets will be available with the best online betting sites on every game in a Table Tennis match, similar to how it is in a tennis match.

And as the events get bigger and more popular, more and more of the top sportsbooks will be offering more markets. You can find a good healthy selection of these bookmakers on our sportsbooks reviews page.
