Playing in one of the most formidable World Cup groups, Japan was not an easy challenge for the Germans, and they managed to pull off a stunning upset despite entering the matchup as big underdogs. While Germany dominated possession as they usually do (76 percent throughout the match), it was all for naught as Japan was able to make the most of its chances in front of goal.

Second-half goals from Ritsu Doan and Takuma Asano saw Germany's 1-0 first-half lead undone. A 33rd minute penalty from Ilkay Gundogan was the only goal for Germany in the loss, who were unable to convert on any of their other 25 shots. Their lack of clinical finishing plagued them, and they'll need to sort that out if they hope to escape the group stages.

Now, Germany turns its attention to Spain, which is coming off its massive 7-0 win against Costa Rica. If they don't figure things out, this could turn into an ugly game for Germany. Prior to Germany's 2-1 loss against Japan, they'd been in inconsistent form but hadn't been losing a lot of games. In their recent set of six UEFA Nations League games, Germany recorded one win, four draws, and one loss. They scored nine goals and conceded seven during that stretch of the schedule.

Both Germany and Spain have talented offenses that are capable of putting up high goalscoring tallies. Only one of those teams showed that to their full capability on Wednesday, however. Still, I expect the lack of success in Germany's attacking third to have its attackers eager to make up for their dismal showing.

Because of that, I believe both teams will get on the board in this game. Spain scored at least one goal in every one of its recent UEFA Nations League games, while Germany was only held goalless one time during that same span.
