Chelsea (-135) vs. Tottenham Hotspur (+360)
Resurgent Chelsea host Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge this weekend and everything points towards them claiming all three points and extending their lead at the top of the Premier League table.
When Chelsea lost 3-0 at Arsenal on September 24, many pundits were writing off the Blues’ chances of finishing in the top four of the league. However, Chelsea have not conceded a single goal in the six games since then, have scored 17 themselves, and have a one-point lead at the top of the table.
Tottenham are still unbeaten in the league this season and find themselves in fifth place, four points behind Chelsea. Spurs have drawn six of their opening 12 games and needed a late penalty from Harry Kane last week to beat a poor West Ham United team.
You also need to factor in that Tottenham play Monaco in the UEFA Champions League this week in a game they have to win to stay in contention of progressing to the Round of 16. The traveling and exertions from the European encounter could cost Spurs dearly.
Spurs and Chelsea have the best and second best defences in the league to date so don’t expect the back of the net to be bulging often in this game. I can see a 1-0 Chelsea win, which is +650 on Bovada, although other pundits are touting a 1-1 draw at odds of +575.
Pick: Chelsea to win 1-0 at +650.
Liverpool (-650) vs. Sunderland (+1400)
The league’s best attack versus a defence with more holes in it than a Swiss cheese should point to one-way traffic in the Liverpool versus Sunderland game this weekend and the odds reflect this with Sunderland being huge +1400 outsiders to win at Anfield.
Liverpool were held to a 0-0 draw at Southampton last week, which ultimately lost them their place at the top of the table. It was only the third time this season that Liverpool didn’t score.
At home, Liverpool have won four and drawn one of their five games, scoring an incredible 17 goals and only leaking four at the other end. The -650 on a Liverpool win looks a certain, even if it has no value unless you’re betting huge amounts.
Sunderland were rooted to the bottom of the table until two games ago, but back-to-back win, including one where they kept their first clean sheet of the season, have seen them climb one place, and they’re only three points adrift of safety right now.
Unfortunately for fans of the Black Cats, I can’t see their revival continuing this weekend. Liverpool are well rested as they don’t have European soccer to contend with and going forward they are such a force.
I can see Sunderland scoring past the red, with Jermain Defoe the most likely candidate at +250 to score at anytime of the game. But I do fancy Liverpool to win either 2-1 (+850) or 3-1 (+900) and return to the top of the table, at least until the conclusion of the Chelsea versus Tottenham match.
Another decent bet is Liverpool to win and both teams to score at +150, and the Liverpool-Liverpool half time / full time result at -250.
Pick: Liverpool-Liverpool half time/full time at +150
Manchester United (-220) vs. West Ham United (+575)
Manchester United, unbeaten in their last four home games, take on struggling West Ham United who have lost their last two games on the road.
Jose Mourinho’s United have struggled for form this season especially at home where they have 2-3-1 record. United welcome back Zlatan Ibrahimovic from his one-match suspension and the Swede should slot straight back into the starting 11.
West Ham looked on course for only their fourth win of the season last weekend against Tottenham, but conceded two late goals to lose 3-2, their seventh loss of the current campaign. Manager Slaven Bilic is under immense pressure to turn the Hammers’ fortunes around as they are only one point above the relegation zone after going three games without a victory.
The -220 on Manchester United to win is a little on the short side but also worth a punt. As is the draw at +350 not only because this game ended 0-0 last season, but also because United host Dutch outfit Feyenoord on November 24 in the Europa League and that game could take plenty out of the United tanks.
Pick: Manchester United to win at -220
