With the World Cup group stages wrapping up, only 16 teams remain. We're officially in the knockout stages, and we're treated to an exciting matchup between the youthful USA squad and the experienced Netherlands. In a winner-takes-all affair, the two sides will do battle on Saturday in hopes of reaching the quarterfinals. We're going to make some USA vs. Netherlands betting picks ahead of the critical matchup.
Before we dive into the betting action, make sure to take a look at out our soccer betting guide in order to get all the tips and tricks you need. Additionally, take a look at our useful World Cup betting guide which has plenty of information.
Spread | Money Line | Total | |
---|---|---|---|
Netherlands | -0.5 (-108) | -110 | O 2.5 (+102) |
USA | +0.5 (-112) | +330 | U 2.5 (-122) |
Draw | +240 |
Heading into the matchup, the Netherlands is the favorite over the USA. The Netherlands comes in with (-110) odds to win in regulation, while the USA has (+330) on the Money Line. It's important to note that a Money Line bet in this case does not extend to extra time. That is the case with most soccer bets. The spread is set at Netherlands -0.5, while the goal total sits at 2.5 goals, leaning towards the Under (-122).
Netherlands Best Bets
The Netherlands looked sharp in their three group-stage matchups, winning two of them and drawing one. The Group A winners are now slated for a matchup with the USA, who placed second in Group B. The matchup between the Netherlands and USMNT offers plenty of betting opportunities, in what figures to be a low-scoring affair.
The Netherlands cruised into the round of 16, while the USA scraped by with a gutsy 1-0 win over Iran. The Netherlands scored five goals in their first three games of the tournament, conceding just one time in what was an impressive showing from the Dutchmen. Cody Gakpo has been wildly successful in front of goal thus far, with a goal in each game of the tournament.
Gakpo will be a key cog for the Dutch side as they look to break down a USMNT defense that has also only conceded one goal at the tournament, and none from open play. The only time USA goalie Matt Turner has been beaten at the World Cup was via a penalty shot from Gareth Bale. Otherwise, the USA defense has been excellent, and the Netherlands will need to work hard to get good looks against a team that held England goalless in their group-stage clash.
Because these two sides both have outstanding defensive records thus far into the tournament, I'm going to target the under of 2.5 goals, thinking that if there is a third goal to be had in this one, it might take more than 90 minutes to achieve. The first bet is Under 2.5 Total Goals at (-122)
In addition to taking a look at the under, I'm expecting Cody Gakpo to get on the board once again on Saturday. The 23-year-old could be a difficult matchup for the USA given his rare combination size and speed. I'll sprinkle on Cody Gakpo Anytime Goalscorer at (+200).
USA Best Bets
The USMNT squeezed their way into the knockout round and will be flowing with confidence ahead of the matchup with the Netherlands. Still without a loss at the World Cup, the USA has only scored two total goals, while conceding just one. Their defense, anchored by central defender Tim Ream, left back Antonee Robinson, right back Sergiño Dest, and whichever fourth defender starts alongside them, will look to slow down Gakpo and the Netherlands.
Christian Pulisic expects to play on Saturday despite suffering a pelvic injury against Iran. Having him on the field to help lead the team will be critical. Assuming he plays, I think the USMNT has a strong chance of staging an upset in this game. Their defense was able to shut down England for a full 90 minutes, and while they haven't had much success on goal, perhaps Pulisic's first World Cup tally will have the team feeling more confident.
Virgil Van Dijk figures to be a problem for the USMNT, but they are fully aware of how crucial it will be for them to get a goal. This is a team that's just fired up to be at this part of the tournament, but they're a dangerous upset candidate against a Netherlands team that was shocked in a 1-1 draw against Ecuador during the group stages. If the USA can take the Netherlands to extra time and potentially even a penalty shootout, anything will be on the table in terms of the outcome.
Because of that, I'm going to roll the dice and support the Americans to pull off the somewhat improbable victory. There's a catch, however. I don't think the USMNT can get it done in the first 90 minutes, so instead of taking the Money Line, there's an alternative bet we're going to place. I'm rolling with "USA to Qualify" at (+178).
