Ligue 1 Format, History, Background

The prestigious soccer league known as Ligue 1 is the top division of the French league system. After the 2023–2024 season, there were only two promoted teams and four relegated teams remaining, for a total of 18 teams instead of the original 20 clubs. Ligue 1 is dominated by the renowned Paris Saint-Germain, ranked as the fifth-best promotion in Europe. It's interesting to remember that because AS Monaco participates, Ligue 1 is theoretically a cross-border competition.

Despite a long history of European soccer, France is a bit later to the game. Paris Saint-Germain were only founded in 1970, with the current league itself founded in 1944. Despite their youth, PSG are one of the most popular teams in the world. They have won the league three times in a row now, and seem well-poised to continue that streak in the next few years under Luis Enrique.

Why PSG Should Still Win Without Mbappe

With an almost limitless supply of money from their owners, Qatar Sports Investments, Paris Saint-Germain has dominated Ligue 1 in recent years due to their skill. There have been no shortage of stars in Paris, from Lionel Messi to Zlatan Ibrahomivic. However, 2024–25 seems to be a bit of a slowdown for PSG’s star power with Kylian Mbappe's departure. Of the current PSG players, only Ousmane Dembele and seasoned goalie Gianluigi Donnarumma could be regarded as household names.

Luis Enrique, regarded as one of the most accomplished managers of his generation, will continue to lead PSG. And Paris Saint-Germain is a very wealthy and talented team, even without the big names. If they have trouble, they may easily fill any gaps with players from the transfer pool.

To be honest, the disparity in wealth between them and all the other Ligue 1 teams is unfair. To bet against PSG would be to hope for an utter downfall of the French heavyweights, an outcome very unlikely to occur at this moment.

Ligue 1 Betting: Why Marseille Can Claim Top 3 Spot

Marseille has cause for optimism as they head into the 2024–25 campaign. They qualified for the Europa League semifinals after being eighth in the previous season. Their journey was interrupted by an aggregate loss to the eventual champions Atalanta, although there were many encouraging things to note.

Marseille finished in the top four of a European competition last season despite having four different managers. Up until September 20, Marcelino served as the team's coach. A week later, Jacques Abardonado took over as interim manager. Gennaro Gattuso held the position for just five months, ending on February 19. Jean-Louis Gasset eventually agreed to work there through the end of the season.

It is now the turn of renowned manager Roberto de Zerbi to resolve the matter. Pep Guardiola has regarded de Zerbi as one of the most important managers of the past 20 years. He just finished an outstanding stint at Brighton. He needs to work out how to best use Marseille's summer acquisitions. These include Valentin Carboni, Lilian Brassier, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Mason Greenwood, Elye Wahi, and Ismael Kone.

According to my predictions, Marseille truly deserved to collect 64 points and place second in Ligue 1 despite all the controversy surrounding the team and its disorganized squad. Their odds of being in the top three this season and qualifying for the Champions League right away are (+150). However, their coaching staff and roster have both improved.

Ligue 1 Futures: Nice is a Dark Horse for European Competition

Despite being one of the lesser teams in Ligue 1, Nice has high hopes. Not only did the team's 5th place performance last year surprise French soccer fans, but it also attracted the interest of Ajax, a Dutch team that quickly hired now-former Nice manager Francesco Farioli. Franck Haise, who has been Nice's head coach for the past five seasons, was hired in his stead this summer.

Nice, who have a right midfielder in Jonathan Clauss who could play as a wing-back and a reliable defender in Dante, should benefit from Haise's expertise managing a 3-5-2 formation with Lens. According to my projections, Nice should have finished third in Ligue 1 the previous year. There is therefore a lot of value on Nice to do so this time around at (+650).

Odds are accurate at the time of writing but are subject to change.
