OSB Premier League Betting Briefing
One of the best football leagues in the world, the English Premier League is noticeably more open in terms of the teams that have won it than the leagues in Spain, Germany, and France. However, that does not mean that there is a genuine twenty-team battle for the title.
The Premier League has been won by six different clubs in this century, but only two of them—Manchester City, Chelsea, and Manchester United—have won it more than once. The other three teams are Liverpool, Leicester City, and Arsenal. City has established supremacy in recent seasons, taking home five of the last six Premier League championships.
Arsenal put a lot of pressure on City last season, but Pep Guardiola's team finally prevailed as part of a historic treble that included the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League. Manchester United experienced a comeback after years of upheaval, completing the season in third place, while Newcastle United placed fourth.
OSB Premier League Winners Betting
Manchester City has clearly been the best team in English soccer for several years now and having at last won the Champions League, it is arguably at its peak.
Yet, in the modern English Premier League, no team can afford to stand still, and City is likely to find the challenge from its main competitors even stronger this season. And they go into the new campaign without Ilkay Gundogan, and with a squad that is largely the same as it was last campaign.
By contrast, Arsenal has made significant changes, bringing in Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Jurrien Timber, and all three were in place early this summer, so Mikel Arteta has had several weeks to incorporate the new men into his team plans. Last season the Gunners had a fantastic first half of the season, then faltered before the end, but this time round, the Arsenal squad is stronger and more experienced and the north London club looks a value pick to win the title.
The challenge from Liverpool and Manchester United is expected to be more intense this year than it was last, but United's off-the-field problems might still derail their season, and the departure of Jordan Henderson has created a gaping hole in the middle of the Liverpool midfield that will be difficult to fill.
OSB Premier League Top Four Betting
Teams that finish in the Top Four in the EPL earn a lucrative ticket to the Champions League and so there is plenty of competition to maximize league placing even if the title is out of reach. Not surprisingly, the four teams mentioned in the title conversation are also dominating the betting for a Top Four place, but you can also find some interesting options outside these clubs.
The arrival of the highly rated coach Mauricio Pochettino at Chelsea means that the Londoners will have a lot of support from bettors. That said, he faces a tough task to rebuild the squad and the owner of Chelsea does not inspire confidence. Elsewhere in London, Ange Postecoglu may also require more than one season to turn around Tottenham's fortunes.
Newcastle therefore looks a better option in the Top Four market. It finished fourth last time, and with considerable resources at its disposal, it stands an excellent chance of doing even better. With the addition of Harvey Barnes and Tonali, Eddie Howe's squad appears to be a strong Top Four pick.
OSB Premier League Relegation Betting
Luton Town’s fall and rise, from the old Division One to non-league status and back again has been one of the most remarkable stories of football resurgence seen in recent years, but it is one of the smallest teams ever to compete in the Premier League and survival seems unlikely.
That said, neither Luton nor fellow promoted side Sheffield United offers much value in the relegation market, and the third new team, Burnley, plays a style of football that could see it cope well with the demands of the Premier League.
There are, however, some other relegation options among teams that survived their first season in the Premier League but which are now facing Second Season Syndrome.
Bournemouth is one of them, having looked destined for the Championship for most of last season, but Nottingham Forest has a much weaker squad and head coach Steve Cooper is under intense pressure. Getting another such effort out of these players may be too much to ask.
