Argentina vs. Mexico Odds
It should come as no surprise that Argentina is considered big favorites over Mexico heading into their group-stage clash. Argentina enters the fray with -195 odds to win the game, whereas a Mexico victory is tabbed at +575. A draw is even a long shot in this one, with +320 odds for a tie. The spread is set at 1.0 goals in favor of Mexico while the books predict the total to fall between 2-3 goals.
Argentina Best Bets
Argentina is one of the 2022 FIFA World Cup favorites but was upended in its historic defeat against Saudi Arabia. Prior to the loss against Saudi Arabia Argentina's offense had scored at least three goals in each of its last five games. They have not conceded a goal during that span, either, scoring 19 goals without surrendering one. In fact, Argentina had not lost a game since 2019 before getting stunned by Saudi Arabia.
Now, it's time for Lionel Messi and company to rebound and silence any doubters after what they're hopeful was a fluke loss against Saudi Arabia. Mexico will present a more formidable challenge than most of the teams Argentina has faced of late, but Argentina will have a chip on its shoulder as it looks to make up for the embarrassing defeat on Tuesday. This presents some very intriguing betting opportunities for Argentina.
I'm expecting Argentina to come out the gate in attack mode against Mexico and look to get on the board early and often. They'll be fired up after getting humbled by Saudi Arabia, and I expect the offense to look to make up for their inefficiency in their tournament opener. The first bet for Argentina on Saturday is "Argentina Total Goals: Over 1.5." At -125, this feels like outstanding value for a team that clears this scoring threshold without blinking an eye.
That's not the only prop we're honing in on, however. I think Argentina will score more than two goals, but also think they had a strong chance of reaching three. Because of that, we're going to ladder this play and also take "Argentina Total Goals: Over 2.5" at +260.
Mexico Best Bets
It doesn't take the odds to tell you Mexico faces an uphill battle Saturday against Argentina. Coming in as significant underdogs, finding solid value bets for Mexico is a bit more difficult. The team's form has been up-and-down of late, culminating in their goalless draw against Poland on Tuesday. After the draw, they'll be determined to put their best foot forward and stun La Abiceleste after they were exposed by Saudi Arabia.
Of course, that'll be easier said and done. As previously mentioned, Argentina's overwhelming attack is nearly impossible to stifle, so the honus will be on Mexico to try and get a goal across for themselves. While Argentina's defense had not conceded a goal in its last six matches prior to Tuesday, they let up two against the surprising Saudi Arabia squad. Mexico's offense could provide an even greater challenge than that of Saudi Arabia.
Mexico will lean on speedy winger Hirving Lozano in order to try to pull out a counter-attack against Argentina. While the team will be in a defensive shape throughout the game, Lozano and the rest of the Mexico attack shouldn't be counted out. While I don't feel confident in placing a bet on Mexico to score against Argentina, I do think this game will yield a few chances for Mexico, and overall will be a higher-scoring game. Because of that, I feel comfortable taking the Game Total of Over 2.5 goals.
While it's not a bet unique to Mexico, if the nation can find a way to get a goal past Argentina, the total will almost certainly land on the higher side of 2.5. Even if Mexico can't score, there's a chance the Argentinian attack can cover this mark on its own, making it worth a look at -115 odds.
