2025 World Men’s Curling Championship Preview

Typically, we’d start our preview of the World Men’s Curling Championship with a look at the betting odds. However, the top betting sites for sports have not listed these as of press time. Numbers should start trickling in over the next month or so, but for now, things are to be determined. Still, the usual suspects will be there once the odds appear:

Here below is what we know about the 2025 event — who’s competing, where, and the format of it all. With few betting details currently accessible, we have a chance to expand on format, countries, and more.

Thirteen different teams qualified for the men’s event already — and all of them earned it. Eight sides are from Europe. To qualify, those eight had to advance via the European Curling Championships which concluded in November. Qualified teams are as follows: Czechia, Germany, Netherlands, Norway, Italy, Scotland, Sweden, and Switzerland.

The Canadians own the home-ice advantage in 2025. Canada has hosted the tournament multiple times elsewhere. Can the home country win with all the pressure on them? After all, Canadians feel this is their sport. Also, Sweden found a way to win at home in 2024.

The other five qualifying teams came from the Pan Continental Curling Championships, which finished in early November. Earning a spot here were Canada, Japan, China, South Korea, and the United States.

These 13 teams will be thrown into a round-robin tournament where they all play each other once (12 total games per team). The top six teams from this stage go into the postseason — with number one and two finishers earning a direct bye into the semi-finals. The playoffs are a classic single-game elimination bracket until there’s a 2025 champion. We have an idea of who that may be, which we dive into next.

Best Bets To Win 2025 Men’s Curling Championship

Never make just a single bet on the 2025 World Men’s Curling Championship. With the knockout nature of the playoffs, it’s just a risk set up for failure. At a minimum, you want at least two bets — one priority pick and one backup. If the numbers present themselves, several bets may be worth taking a deeper look at. Anyhow, let us begin with some contenders:

Sweden

This is the team that may be the early favorite to repeat. While that will surprise some, Sweden parlayed their 2024 World Championship triumph into a very successful season. Currently, they are the top-ranked team in the sport. Yes, Sweden is ahead of Canada. Let that sink in for a second. Their team balance allows them to thrive in these types of tournaments.

Do not look at individual lists for top curlers. Only one exists in the Top 10, but Niklas Edin is a force to be reckoned with. Edin pulled it off once and the Swedes will get underestimated some. The one thing to hedge is some bettors may fear that Canada succumbs to the pressure again. In that case, Sweden will be a great hedge bet as late March approaches.

Italy

Zero pressure exists for the Italians. Currently, they are the No. 4 ranked team in the sport, but they’re earning the reputation for coming up short in big moments. They won two bronze medals and a fourth place at the previous three world championships.

However, there was concern from the recent European championships. Italy performed pretty well during the round robin but faltered in the knockout phase again. Teams like Scotland and Germany thrived once more.

Bluntly, it may be the one time to take long odds on Italy to pull this off.

Canada

Canada wins these tournaments more than anyone else. The Canadians own a whopping 36 gold medals at this event — 24 more than the next-best team, Sweden.

Nevermind the all-time history though because Canada has recent history going its way too. Behind skip Brad Gushue, the Canadians struck for gold at the Pan Continental competition again. Four of the top eight world curlers are from Canada.

Canada has finished runner-up three times in a row at the world championship. Canada with a raucous crowd has to be wagered on somewhere. Shop around for some good numbers. They will be out there.

Germany Or Scotland?

Scotland had won the previous three European Championships only to see Germany rise up and surprise everyone in the knockout phase. Bruce Mouat (Scotland) is widely regarded as the best curler on the planet right now. Even that was not enough to defeat the Germans.

However, the worlds can be a different stage where the pressure affects countries differently. Scotland has been there before. What did they learn from the humbling semifinal defeat to Canada last year? If the Scots can avoid the Canadians in the semis, they have a chance. Unlike Germany, Scotland has less pressure riding on them currently.
