The No. 1 Contender: Canada (Odds: -108)
Winners of 36 menâs world titles in curling, Canada is easily the most dominant team in the history of the sport. While they do have a long lineage of success when it comes to winning world titles, Canada has not been uber-successful as of late. Their last championship at this competition came in 2017, and they were not close to the finals in the 2021 tournament after being eliminated by Scotland in the first qualification game.
However, it would be very unwise to count out the Canadians at any curling competition. They finished as runner-ups in 2018 and 2019, and were it not for the COVID-19 pandemic; they would have potentially won a championship in 2020. Also, Canada will be returning the lionâs share of their team in this yearâs competition and are already off to a hot start with a 4-0 mark in round-robin play. CTA
The No. 2 Team: Sweden (Odds: +122)
The reigning world champion, Sweden, is looking for its 11th overall menâs curling title in 2022. A powerhouse on the ice, the Swedes are a powerhouse and have won the last three world titles. At the 2021 World Championship, Sweden had a handful of players lead the competition in a variety of statistical categories; in fact three of the four main player percentages.
Christoffer Sundgren was first in leads at 92.1%, Rasmus WranÄ led the way in seconds at 89.3% and Oskar Eriksson led the field in thirds at 89.1%. With the majority of this team returning in 2022, Sweden has an excellent chance for a fourth straight title. However, they are off to a slow start in round-robin play so that they will need a strong performance in the early part of this week. CTA
Final Team Spotlight: Scotland (Odds: +1600)
The last squad on our countdown, Scotland, is seeking their first world championship since 2009. A tenacious team, the Scots were runner-ups in 2021 after a thrilling semifinal matchup against Russia or RCF, which they won 90% to 78%. Second Bobby Lammie led the way in that showdown with a 95% player percentage.
The squad was also bolstered by the performance of third Grant Hardie who was second at the 2021 World Championship in his position category for player percentages at 86.2%. While they ultimately fell short to Sweden in the championship game, 89% to 83%, Scotland does have the bones to make a run to their sixth world title. CTA
Prediction: In what will be another top-heavy competition, look for Sweden to pull away again. The Swedes just have too much veteran firepower on their roster and have been thoroughly dominant at the last four World Curling Championships. CTA
