The second-ranking event of the 2023/24 snooker season starts in Nuremberg Germany next week, and here we take a look ahead to the 2023 European Masters with our latest snooker betting picks. Ronnie O’Sullivan is the favorite with the best betting sites, but can he win this event for only the second time in history?

This competition has had a checkered past. Under a series of different names, it’s been in existence since 1989 but has at times been dropped from the circuit. Its latest resurrection was in 2016, and since then, it has been branded as the European Masters and has also carried world ranking points.

Kyren Wilson is the defending champion. Twelve months ago he defeated Barry Hawkins 9-3 in the final held in Germany. This year Wilson is +1200 to retain his title. But that puts him way behind the favorites in the latest betting.

Betting to win the 2023 European Masters

The favorite to win the 2023 European Masters is the one and only Ronnie O’Sullivan. The Rocket is +500 to win an event he last won way back in 2003 when he defeated Stephen Hendrey 9-6 in Torquay.

Since then, the Rocket’s appearances have been sporadic. He has appeared in the final twice, first losing 9-8 to Judd Trump in 2016, and then losing 10-9 to Fan Zhengyi in February 2022. It could be argued that the Rocket is getting closer. But at the same time, he gives off the impression he isn’t a big fan of the event.

A close second in the betting behind O’Sullivan to win the European Masters is Judd Trump at +550. Trump last won this event in 2017, when he defeated Stuart Bingham 9-7 to defend the title he first won by beating O’Sullivan 12 months before.

There is a slight gap in the betting before we get to Mark Selby at +800 and Neil Robertson at +850. Shaun Murphy is +1100, with defending champion Kyren Wilson at +1200. The trio of Mark Allen, John Higgins, and new world champion Luca Brecel are all at +1400.

Our Picks to Win

First thing first, we’re not going near the Rocket in the betting to win this event. We all know the script by now. If the Rocket turns up and is in the mood, he wins. Yes, we get it. But how often has he looked in the mood to win this event in the past? Not often, is the only answer there.

We're not going near Judd Trump at +550 either. He has been too out of form lately.

So who can we bet on? Well, given the odds, we can hedge our bets for this event and pick a couple of players to win.

Shaun Murphy +1100

First up is Shaun Murphy. We all know that Murphy respects every event he plays in. He’s not the sort of guy to not fancy a trip to Germany and play like he doesn’t want to be there. And the Magician has also been in good form over the past few months.

He finished the 2022/23 season disappointingly, losing 10-9 to his old friend Si Jiahui in the 1st Round. This came after Murphy had had an outstanding couple of months on the circuit.

But he didn’t let that get him down and bounced back by winning the Championship League in Leicester, beating Mark Williams to win the opening ranking event of the current season.

Murphy has also won this event twice before, although that was back in 2007 and 2008. But it’s more for his recent form that we are making Shaun 'the Magician' Murphy our opening pick to win the 2023 European Masters.

Luca Brecel +1400

Luca Brecel came of age earlier this year by winning the 2023 Snooker World Championship. He didn’t win it the easy way either. On route to the title, he defeated Ronnie O’Sullivan 13-10 in the quarter-final stage. And in the final, he beat Mark Selby 18-15 to win the first-ever world crown.

This event isn’t in his native Belgium. But it is on the continent of Europe, and for that reason, Brecel might have more incentive to win in front of a European crowd. The new world champion is also a good price at +1400, and we think that makes Luca Brecel a good betting pick to win the 2023 European Masters.
