Always remember to double-check these IndyCar series betting odds until you actually submit your wager. Our odds on the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 are accurate entering Thursday, August 8. That gives the best online sportsbooks in the United States plenty of time to make adjustments and react to present action ahead of the opening lap on Saturday, August 17, at 6 p.m. eastern standard time.

So, can anyone derail Palou at the raceway in Madison? And in doing so, can they also make it less likely he’ll secure a second straight IndyCar Series Drivers championship, which would also happen to be his third title in four years?

These are the questions everyone’s asking. And we are hoping to answer them.

Could the Bommarito 500 be a Blow to Alex Palou’s IndyCar Series Drivers Championship Aspirations?

Alex Palou (-200) enters the Bommarito 500 with a 49-point lead in the IndyCar Series standings. That’s a pretty sizable gap with just a few races to go. But as others have pointed out, he’s entering a different part of the schedule.

Courses like the World Wide Technology Raceway in Madison are more oval courses. Palou, however, is at his most lethal on circuit and street courses. With three of the four remaining races taking place on oval courses, this should theoretically open the door for drivers like Scott Dixon (+550), Will Power (+550) and Colton Herta (+800).

While these are fair points, it would be foolish to entirely dismiss Palou at the Bommarito 500. He has held leads in eight of 12 races this season, ultimately winning two, and he’s also racked up points during every event.

Oval courses might not be his strong suit—he finished outside the top five in Madison last year_but he’s a threat to win on any track.

Can Scott Dixon Repeat as the Winner at World Wide Technology Racetrack?

Scott Dixon (+550) picked up the IndyCar Series victory at Madison in 2023. And he’s definitely a threat to pick up another win this year.

Don’t let the standings fool you. While Dixon trails his Chip Ganassi racing teammate Alex Palou by more than 50 points, he might be in a completely different position if not for some technical bad luck. Tire and electrical issues derailed two of his earlier races. Dixon and Palou could be neck and neck if not for those twists of fate.

What’s more, Dixon has proven his mettle on oval courses many times over. Last season, he closed the schedule on a tear, winning three of four races. With his hairpin driving on these type of tracks, he could be in line for another victory.

Who’s the Better Bet to Win in Madison: Will Power or Pato O’Ward?

On the surface, this isn’t much of a question. IndyCar Series oddsmakers have Will Power (+550) as the more likely winner than Pat O’Ward (+1200).

Still, O’Ward is tantalizing value at 12-to-1 odds. Granted, there is a boom or bust feel to how he drives. He has two victories and four top-five victories, but he’s yet to turn in a pole finish.

At the same time, there is a steady to how he drives on oval courses. Take last year as an example. O’Ward finished second in the 2023 Bommarito 500.

And yet, we can’t move off Will Power. If you’ll recall, right before the season started, we billed him as the best bet to win the 2024 IndyCar Series Drivers Championship. That sentiment has wavered a bit thanks to Palou’s performance so far, but Power remains in second.

Official Pick to Win IndyCar Series Bommarito 500

In the end, we find ourselves drawn to a pair of names to win the IndyCar Series Bommarito 500: The reigning victor Scott Dixon and Josef Newgarden (+3200).

The latter name may catch some by surprise. Newgarden enters the August 17 showdown ranking in eighth in total season points. However, we’re about to hit his specialty part of the schedule. Nobody on the IndyCar Series is flat-out better than him when it comes to driving on an oval course.

And wouldn’t you know it, Newgarden’s lone victory this season came on an oval course. Coincidence? We think not. With three of the next four races in oval-course environments, he’s a name to keep an eye. Winning it all is likely out of the question, but he can absolutely throw a wrench into the IndyCar Drivers Series Championship discussion
