Netherlands set to sweep Field Hockey Gold Medals in Paris

The Paris Olympics Field Hockey competition gets underway on Saturday, with the Netherlands looking to double up and win both the men’s and women’s gold medals. The Dutch women in particular have dominated in recent years, and they expect to win gold again in 2024. As for the men, they have a great chance to win their first field hockey gold since 2000. Men’s Field Hockey has been a part of the Games since 1908. Traditionally, India has been the strongest nation, but their dominance has declined since its eighth gold medal in 1980.

Since then, gold has been shared with Germany (three wins) and the Netherlands (two wins) enjoying the most success.

Women’s Field Hockey wasn’t introduced to the Olympics until 1980. The Netherlands and Australia are the two most dominant nations, sharing seven of the eleven golds.

Out of the two nations, the Dutch hold the upper hand. They are the defending champions, and they have won three of the last five Olympics, picking up silver medals on the two occasions they didn’t stand on top of the podium.

In the men’s event, Belgium is the marginal favorite to win at +300. The Netherlands is close behind at +325 on the money line. The two nations share a land border and have an intense rivalry. A final between the two nations would be interesting.

Belgium and the Netherlands are the two nations to beat. The Belgians have wound up in Group B alongside India, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, and Ireland. Whereas, the Dutch look to have a slightly less tricky Group A consisting of Germany, Great Britain, Spain, France, and South Africa.

With the top four nations from each group making it through to the quarter-finals, neither of the favorites should have any problem making it to the knockout stages.

In the most recent competition of note, Belgium lost the final of the 2023 World Cup with a shoot-out defeat to Germany after a 3-3 tie in regulation time. But the Belgians are the defending Olympic champions, having won the final at the Tokyo Games against Australia thanks to a 3-2 shootout win, following another regular time draw (1-1 on this occasion).

They are the No.1 side in the current FIH World Rankings, and in Jip Janssen, they have the second top scorer in the recent World Cup to call upon in tight moments. Janssen scored both goals in the semi-final against Belgium and also found the net in the third-place playoff win over Australia.

To win the women’s competition, the gold medal betting is more clear-cut. On the money line, the Netherlands is the clear favorite to win Olympic gold at -200. Their closest rivals are the Argentine women (+650), whom the Dutch defeated 3-1 in the final at the Tokyo Games.
