In the NHL Stanley Cup betting lines, oddsmakers are counting on history repeating itself.
Last spring, the Florida Panthers went from 2022-23 Stanley Cup finalists to 2023-24 Stanley Cup champions. It was the Edmonton Oilers who were vanquished by the Panthers in last season's Cup final series. And it's the Oilers who are being set as favorites in the 2024-25 NHL Stanley Cup odds.
The NHL odds are showing the Oilers as the +725 chalk to win their first Stanley Cup title since the 1989-90 season. It's the defending champion Panthers who are next in the odds at a betting line of +950. Then both the Dallas Stars and Toronto Maple Leafs are showing in the NHL odds at a line of +1100.

The Panthers joined the 2008-09 Pittsburgh Penguins as the only teams since 1984 to go from losing finalists to Stanley Cup champions in successive seasons. Interestingly, the team that did it in 1983-84 was the Oilers.

Stanley Cup Champions Don't Often Repeat
Prior to making your NHL picks, realize that the Panthers are also facing a tall order to repeat as Stanley Cup champions. Since 1990, just three teams have won back-to-back Stanley Cup titles.
The Pittsburgh Penguins won in 1990-91 and again in 1991-92. It was the Detroit Red Wings who achieved it in 1996-97 and 1997-98. And the Penguins would do it once more in 2015-16 and 2016-17.
Edmonton Oilers (+725)
It's hard to argue with setting the Oilers as the chalk to win the 2024-25 Stanley Cup. In Connor McDavid, they suit up the NHL's best player. And sometimes linemate Leon Draisaitl isn't far behind when ranking the top-10 talents in the league.
Edmonton stumbled to a 2-5-1 start last season. The Oilers got rid of coach Jay Woodcroft and goalie Jack Campbell and they went into orbit. Then after falling behind 3-0 in the Cup final series against Florida, Edmonton won three in a row to force Game 7 before ultimately succumbing.
Florida Panthers (+950)
A long summer of celebration is done and now it's time for the Panthers to get back to work. They'll be seeking emulate Florida's other NHL franchise, the Tampa Bay Lightning (2020-22), who went to three successive Stanley Cup finals.
Several pieces of Florida's Cup-winning puzzle have broken away. Players such as Brandon Montour, Ryan Lomberg, Anthony Stolarz, Kevin Stenlund, and Oliver Ekman-Larsson moved on for better deals elsewhere. While none of them are superstars, it's still a lot of parts to be replacing.
Dallas Stars (+1100)
Stanley Cup finalists in 2019 and Western Conference finalists the past two springs, at some point the Stars will be taking that next step. Certainly, losing veteran forward Joe Pavelski to retirement was a hit, but this is a young club full of talent that has been allowed to grow together.

Jake Oettinger is among the NHL's best goalies. Miro Heiskanen is an underrated defender. Up front, Jason Robertson, Wyatt Johnson and Roope Hintz are all dangerous.
Toronto Maple Leafs (+1100)
Spring is that time of year when the flowers bloom, the trees blossom and the Leafs crash out of the opening round of the playoffs. It happened again last spring for the seventh time in eight seasons.
Toronto has a new coach in Craig Berube. He guided St. Louis to a surprise Stanley Cup title in 2018-19. Can he be the guy to motivate the likes of Auston Matthews, William Nylander and Mitch Marner to be as effective in the postseason as they are during the regular season?
New Jersey Devils (+1200)
A team that missed the playoffs as a Stanley Cup contender? Yes indeed. The Devils were a 100-point plus team in 2022-23. Last season, injuries and sub-par goaltending brought about New Jersey's demise.

The latter problem was solved with the addition of goalie Jacob Markstrom from the Calgary Flames. Sheldon Keefe, let go by Toronto, is the new coach. He'll have at his disposal the likes of Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, Jesper Bratt, Timo Meier and stud defenseman Dougie Hamilton, who's back from injury.
Nashville Predators (+1600)
No NHL team retooled more effectively in the summer than the Predators. They were adding proven goal-scoring and Stanley Cup-winning talent in Steven Stamkos and Jonathan Marchessault.
They signed all-star goalie Juuse Saros to a long-term deal and picked up Brady Skjei to bolster a defense anchored by Norris Trophy winner Roman Josi.
And The Stanley Cup Winner Is . . .
Since arriving in Dallas as GM, Jim Nill has steadily built a stellar squad with astute drafting. The home-grown talent includes Oettinger, Heiskenan and forwards Johnson, Robertson, Hintz and captain Jamie Benn.
They've been to one Cup final series in 2019 and nearly got there again last season. This season, the team from the Big D goes all the way.
