NHL Art Ross Trohpy picks

Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid is the betting favorite to win the NHL Art Ross Trophy and that really isn't surprising. The Art Ross Trophy, which goes to the league's regular-season scoring leader, has wound up in McDavid's hands five times since 2017.

No wonder then that he's the odds-on -185 chalk to be NHL scoring champion again during the 2024-25 season. McDavid's three-year reign as Art Ross Trophy winner came to a halt last season, but it's not Nikita Kucherov, the guy who dethroned him, that is the second betting choice.

That spot is going to Nathan MacKinnon. The Colorado Avalanche star is the +210 second favorite in this betting market.

Kucherov is the third betting choice at +600 and 2019-20 Art Ross Trophy winner and McDavid teammate Leon Draisaitl is fourth in this market at +750. They are the only players assigned odds shorter than +1000.

McDavid Fits Traditional Art Ross Trophy Trend

Over the history of the Art Ross Trophy, there have always been players who've been able to put together lengthy runs where they've claimed the NHL scoring title as their personal property. In recent decades, Wayne Gretzky was a 10-time Art Ross Trophy winner from 1981-94. Mario Lemieux won it six times between 1988-97 and Jaromir Jagr was a five-time Art Ross Trophy winner from 1995, through 2001.

McDavid certainly fits into this mold. The Oilers superstar has taken home the Art Ross Trophy following five seasons since 2017. Is he going to make it six in 2024-25? Let's break down the chances of all the top contenders in the Art Ross Trophy odds.

Connor McDavid (-185)

Over the past three seasons, McDavid is averaging 136 points per campaign. That is including his 2022-23 season in which he was setting career highs with 64 goals and 153 points while winning his fifth and most recent Art Ross.

McDavid's resume is displaying seven 100-point seasons over his last eight NHL campaigns. It's a level of consistency that will - and has - won him an impressive number of NHL scoring titles.

Nathan MacKinnon (+210)

The reigning Hart Trophy winner as NHL MVP, MacKinnon is always right among the contenders in the NHL scoring race. However, he's never been able to top the list.

Last season was his best as an NHLer. MacKinnon would account for 51-89-140 numbers. It was his second successive 100-point campaign.

Nikita Kucherov (+600)

In winning his second career Art Ross last season, the Tampa Bay Lightning star was dishing out a career-high 100 assists. Kucherov's goals (44) and points (144) totals were also personal bests.

He'll be hard-pressed to duplicate it this season. Multiple 40-goal scorer Steven Stamkos left Tampa Bay for Nashville. Without his deadly one timer, the Lightning power play doesn't figure to be nearly as effective.

Leon Draisaitl (+750)

Draisaitl is fresh off both his fifth career 100-point and 40-goal season. Only Gretzky (nine) and Jari Kurri (seven) are showing more 40-goals seasons with the Oilers.

Last season, Draisaitl became the Oilers all-time leader in power-play goals after notching his 127th career power-play marker on October 17 in Nashville. That was on his way to becoming the sixth player in NHL history to have three consecutive seasons of at least 20 power-play goals.

NHL Art Ross Trophy Longshots To Consider

A consistent offensive producer, New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin (+3000) set career highs in all offensive categories last season with 49-71-120 totals. He's off to a fantastic start this season. Panarin currently is atop the NHL scoring race through five games with 12 points. In the history of a Rangers franchise that dates back to 1926, he's the first player to ever record four multi-point games to start an NHL season.

Looking to bounce back from a distastrous 2023-24 season that saw them miss the Stanley Cup playoffs, one of the factors that stalled the New Jersey Devils was an injury to young superstar Jack Hughes (+3000). Just 23 years of age, the previous season saw Hughes potting 43 goals and accounting for 99 points.

Art Ross Trophy Pick

In Oilers franchise history, only Gretzky (472) has recorded more multi-point games than the 301 assembled by McDavid. It's that ability to produce points quickly and in bunches that makes McDavid a perennial threat to win the Art Ross.

As well, only Gretzky (nine) shows more 100-point seasons in an Edmonton uniform than the seven recorded by McDavid. His combination of consistency and explosiveness, as well as the fact that he traditonally becomes a more productive player as the season wears on, makes McDavid the best bet in the NHL Art Ross Trophy picks.
