Wednesday NHL picks

The beginning of the new NHL season may still be a few weeks away, but that hasn’t stopped the bookmakers from opening a new book to win the 2025 Stanley Cup. The Florida Panthers are the defending champions, and they are also the favorites to win again next year in the latest NHL betting futures.

  • The 2024/25 NHL season is starting in October. The Panthers will host the Boston Bruins in their opening fixture
  • In 2023/24, the Florida Panthers finally got their hands on the Stanley Cup with a hard-fought 4-3 series win over the Edmonton Oilers
  • Alongside the Oilers and the New Jersey Devils, the Panthers are one of the betting favorites to win the Stanley Cup again in 2025

The Florida Panthers will be looking to defend the Stanley Cup in 2025.

It won’t be easy for Paul Maurice and his franchise. Already locked in for next season are Aleksander Barkov, Matthew Tkachuk, Sam Bennett, Carter Verhaeghe, Aaron Ekblad, Gustav Forsling, and Sergei Bobrovsky, but other big names are entering free agency.

Holding on to the bulk of the players shouldn’t be difficult for the current Stanley Cup holders. But that doesn’t mean some might not look to cash in on their cup win and move elsewhere.

How the 2024/25 season goes could depend on who is on the roster when the season starts.

The Panthers finally get their hands on the big one

In the 2024 Stanley Cup finals, the Florida Panthers raced into a 3-0 series lead against the Edmonton Oilers. They had one hand on the cup. But the Edmonton Oilers had other ideas and fought back bravely to square the series at 3-3.

The Panthers had one last card to play. At this stage, they looked to have blown it. But their remaining card was a home fixture at the Amerant Bank Arena in the final match, and that played a huge part in the Panthers' edgy 2-1 win in the deciding game which finally saw them crowned as Stanley Cup winners.

Talk about doing it the hard way. But that is all irrelevant now, as the name inscribed on the trophy is that of the Florida Panthers.

So can Paul Maurice and his team do it again in 2025? Let’s see what the best NHL betting online sites say.

The dominant force in the Atlantic Division

The Panthers made it to the Stanley Cup final in 2023. They had a taste of the big time, and they liked what they saw. The 4-1 series defeat to the Vegas Golden Knights was a chastening experience.

Some franchises wouldn’t come back from such a bitter disappointment. But instead of sulking about the loss, the Panthers came back stronger.

In the 2023/24 season, they won the Atlantic Division, by one point ahead of the Boston Bruins.

It’s fair to say they received a helping hand from the Bruins, who lost their final two regular-season matches, and three of their last four. But the Panthers were piling the pressure on with their strong finish. And they made sure they were there, ready and waiting, for any slip from Boston.

In the Eastern Conference playoffs, Florida confirmed their position as the superior team in the Atlantic Division with a second-round 4-2 series win over the Bruins.

Betting to win the 2024/25 Atlantic Division

In the betting to win the 2024/25 Atlantic Division, Boston’s falloff at the end of the previous regular season has been noted.

The Panthers are the favorite at +190. But second in the betting is the Toronto Maple Leafs at +350, with the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Boston Bruins at +450.

The bookmakers appear to see the division as a four-way fight, as the fifth franchise in the betting, the Detroit Red Wings, are out at +1100.
