Hurricanes Looking to Keep Winning Ways Going vs. Lowly Flyers

One of the best teams in the Eastern Conference and a surefire contender come playoff time will take the ice on Thursday, March 9th when the Carolina Hurricanes welcome the struggling Philadelphia Flyers to PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina. The puck drops at 7 PM ET here. Philly is coming off a brutal 5-2 loss to the always-dangerous Tampa Bay Lightning Tuesday on the road. Flyers head coach John Tortorella is known all across the league for his hot-headed ways and unfortunately, we've seen that a lot in 2022-23 because of bad his team is. Philly is currently 14th in the East with a rough 24-29-11 record. That's the third-worst in the conference. To make matters worse, they're sliding in recent weeks, going 2-7-1 in the last 10 games. Tony DeAngelo also just got suspended for a pair of games after spearing Cory Perry, which means he'll miss Thursday's contest.

While Philadelphia isn't exactly rock solid defensively, their biggest issue is scoring goals. The team is finding the back of the net just 2.62 times per night, which ranks 29th in the NHL. Travis Konecny is their biggest bright spot with 27 goals and 27 assists, but he hasn't suited up since February due to an upper-body injury. Producing offensively proved to be an issue again versus Tampa Bay Tuesday. Morgan Frost got the Flyers on the board early in the first period but from that point on it was all Lightning, who put five past netminder Carter Hart. He did make 39 saves as well. Considering their track record against Carolina, this will be an uphill battle, especially on the road.

The Canes are just one of many teams who could represent the East in the Stanley Cup. That's just how talented this conference is. Carolina is occupying second at the moment with a 42-12-8 record, nine points behind the league-best Boston Bruins. This group is really thriving lately as well, going 8-2-0 in their last 10 outings. That includes victories over the Lightning, Sens, Blues, and Capitals, among others. The Hurricanes have a three-headed monster offensively in Martin Necas, Sebastian Aho, and Andrei Svechkinov, who are all well over 20 goals apiece. Necas is the leader with 25 goals and 34 assists for 59 points. The trio is a big reason Carolina is one of the top-scoring teams in the league.

Earlier this week though, it was others who made the difference against Montreal. Brady Skjei, Jaccob Slavin, and Jesper Fast all got on the scoresheet. Jesperi Kotkaniemi meanwhile scored the decisive goal in the sixth round of the shootout. With the victory, the Canes moved four points clear of the third-place New Jersey Devils. Carolina will surely welcome a return home for a pair of games in Raleigh. They're an impressive 22-7-2 at PNC Arena this season. The Hurricanes face a tough matchup after the Flyers leave town, however, with the Vegas Golden Knights making the trip down for a cross-conference clash.
