Don't Expect the Niners to Beat the Rams

Once you get into Week 10 of the NFL regular season, games can get tougher to predict. Some contenders take their foot off the gas. Bad teams pick up random victories. We saw a lot of this happen in Week 9.

But this matchup between the Niners and Rams should be more straightforward and immune to that shock factor. Los Angeles is not one to drop games against inferior opponents. Their only two losses this season have come against the Arizona Cardinals and Tennessee Titans, two Super Bowl contenders.

The Niners, who check in at 3-5, are certainly not a Super Bowl contender. It also matters that the Rams are coming off a loss, which just so happened to be their first after a four-game winning streak. They'll be looking to get back in the W column as they try to keep up with the first-place Cardinals in the NFC West.

Furthermore, the Rams are also built to absolutely thrash the Niners. San Francisco has proven to be good at defending against the pass, but they're 25th in points allowed per game overall and have one of the three worst rushing defenses in the league. Chances are they won't fare too well against Matthew Stafford's playactions and the running back duo of Darrell Henderson and Sony Michael.

OSB Prediction: Los Angeles Rams (-197)

We're Confident the Rams will Cover vs the 49ers

Here's a look at the current point spread for Niners-Rams:

  • Los Angeles Rams (-4): -110
  • San Francisco 49ers (+4): -110

Four points will seem like a lot to some people. The Niners do have the personnel to put pressure on Stafford, and they rank 11th net yards allowed per passing attempt, in addition to 10th in total passing touchdowns surrendered.

Still, that doesn't bother us. San Francisco has lost five of their last six games, and only one of those letdowns has come by less than a touchdown.

Knowing that each of the Rams' past four victories have come by no fewer than nine points and that only one of their wins this season has come by fewer than five points, we're counting on them to cover.

OSB Prediction: Los Angeles Rams, -4 (-110)

Cautiously Invest in Rams-Niners Hitting the Over

Here are the odds on the Rams-Niners over/under:

  • Over 49: -110
  • Under 49: -110

This is the toughest pick to make. We are fairly certain the Rams will hit their season average of 29 points per game or score even more. But the Niners are a wild card.

On the bright side, it seems like they're sticking with Jimmy Garoppolo under center. You'll want to re-evaluate the situation if they finally hand the keys to rookie Trey Lance. The offense will suffer if they do.

Regardless, though, the Niners have scored more than 22 points just once over their past five games. The Rams will need to do the heavy lifting if that trend sticks, which could prove difficult if San Francisco continues to defend so well against the pass and forces them to rely on the clock-consuming ground game.

Ultimately, we like the over here. Given how well the Rams offense has played this year, the Niners should only need to tally something like 12 to 15 points for this hit. It's a risk, make no mistake, but investing in a sub-50-point under seems like the less sensible play from where we're standing.

OSB Prediction: Over (-110)
