Should the Buffalo Bills Continue to Lead the NFL Futures Field?
It's not hard to see why all the oddsmakers love the Bills. They are metrics, darling.
Buffalo ranks fourth in points scored per game and second in points allowed per game. No other team places inside the top five of both categories. The Dallas Cowboys come closest.
Some have wondered whether Bill's offense might fall off around the postseason. Quarterback Josh Allen has been playing with a UCL injury for roughly half the year, and the team has struggled to generate momentum on the ground against certain opponents.
For the most part, we're not concerned. The Bills have the chance to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs entering Week 18, and their defense is good enough to offset any off games from their offense. They are what the metrics say they are: a worthy NFL futures bet.
Who's the Better Super Bowl Bet: Philadelphia Eagles or San Francisco 49ers?
The San Francisco 49ers (+600) have verged on dominant for much of this year. Sure, they started the season off slow, but their defense kicked it into high gear from the jump, and the acquisition of star running back Christian McCaffrey has gone a long way.
Still, the offense nevertheless has questions. San Francisco is now on their third quarterback of the season. Sophomore Trey Lance and his replacement, Jimmy Garoppolo, both suffered injuries that will keep them out of the lineup for the rest of the year. That has left Brock Purdy to steer the offense from under center. And while he's shown the arm strength to make some nice throws down the field, his lack of experience could prove to be an obstacle in the playoffs.
That's why the Philadelphia Eagles (+550) are far more attractive to us. Many are worried about quarterback Jalen Hurts missing the past couple of games with an injury. We can't get there. This very much feels like the Eagles are playing it safe. They don't need to be winning games right now. They have home-field advantage sewn up. And given how scorching hot the offense has looked with Hurts in the fold, they are, by far, the more balanced team compared to San Francisco.
Best Dark Horse Bet to Win the Super Bowl
The Miami Dolphins (+6000) initially had our eye here. Their offense has more big-play potential than any other team. But star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is a last-minute scratch for a Week 18 tilt with the New York Jets that will determine Miami's playoff fate. We can't, in good conscience, pick the Dolphins when we're not even confident in their ability to make the playoffs.
That brings us to the New York Giants (+6000).
Though the offense has been a roller coaster all year, they have serious playmaking upside on defense. New York knows how to force turnovers, put pressure on the front line and doesn't make a lot of mistakes. That, in turn, allows them to control the pace of games—a grind-it-out style that tends to fare quite well in the playoffs.
Are the Cincinnati Bengals or Dallas Cowboys the Bigger NFL Futures Threat?
According to the Simple Rating System, which ranks teams by a combination of point differential and strength of schedule, the Dallas Cowboys (+1000) are the second-best team in football, behind only the Bills. And yet, we can't bring ourselves to trust them over the Cincinnati Bengals (+700).
Inconsistency has plagued Dallas' offense at stages this season. More than that, they could have a more difficult path out of their conference. There are more potential powerhouse threats in the NFC than in the AFC. And with the Bengals officially healthy on both sides of the ball, it makes sense to ride their current two-way wave especially when a simpler path to the Super Bowl accompanies it.
Official 2023 NFL Super Bowl Prediction
And our 2023 NFL Super Bowl prediction goes to...the Kansas City Chiefs (+380).
This isn't a spicy pick by any means. The Chiefs have the second-best Super Bowl odds in 2023, a placement they unlocked with a league-best offense led by Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce.
Skeptics will focus on Kansas City's defensive struggles. That's fair. The Chiefs are hovering around the bottom 12 of points allowed per game. But they've also shown the capacity to force turnovers, and they actually rank inside the top 10 of net yards allowed per passing attempt.
Moral of the story: The Chiefs are more of a two-way team than they seem. And that makes them incredibly dangerous.
OSB Prediction: Kansas City Chiefs (+380)
