After an embarrassing Week 1 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, are the New York Giants ready to pick up a win in Week 2 vs. the Arizona Cardinals? Or should you fade the G-Men in advance of their matchup with the Cards on Sunday, September 17, at 4:05 p.m. EST, at State Farm Stadium in Glendale Arizona?
As it just so happens, we’re here to offer an answer to these very questions. Like usual, though, let’s begin by taking a look at the latest NFL online betting odds:
Always remember to double-check these online NFL betting odds until you actually submit your wager. Our New York Giants vs. Arizona Cardinals betting odds are accurate as of Tuesday, September 12. That gives the best online sportsbooks in the United States plenty of time to make changes between now and opening kickoff.
For the time being, oddsmakers appear to decidedly favor the Giants over the Cardinals. But we can’t just write off how bad they were last week, when they suffered a 40-0 thrashing at the hands of the Cowboys. Or…can we?
Quite frankly, regardless of the outcome, this game will be telltale for both teams. Currently, the best NFL betting sites seem torn on how to view New York and Arizona in the 2023 NFL futures betting market. What happens in Week 2, this Sunday, will go a long way toward framing the trajectory for these squads over the rest of the season.
Why Are the New York Giants Favored to Beat the Arizona Cardinals?
Giving New York the benefit of the doubt after watching them get absolutely torched in Week 1 is quite the decision. Then again, these Week 2 NFL betting lines might say more about the Cardinals than the Giants.
With quarterback Kyle Murray still nursing an ACL injury he suffered in Week 14 of last season, Arizona once again plans to start Joshua Dobbs under center against New York, according to head coach Jonathan Gannon, who is in his first year on the job. That decision clearly doesn’t sit right with the market. Dobbs completed 21-of-30 passes in a Week 1 loss to the Washington Commanders while also fumbling the ball three times and committing two total turnovers. The Giants defense should, in theory, pose an even greater test.
Still, we can’t just pretend New York’s defense is solid. The offensive line might be among the five weakest in the NFL, and signing a massive extension has clearly not improved quarterback Daniel Jones’ decision-making. He completed just 53.6 percent of his passes against the Cowboys while tossing zero touchdowns against two interceptions. Even if Arizona’s defensive pressure isn’t on par with Dallas’, we could see them breaking through New York’s frontline and making life difficult on Jones.
And look, this doesn’t have to be about anything the Cardinals, specifically, do. This can and will be about the Giants. Their offense is just flat-out bad. They have now lost their past two games against the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas by a combined 78-7. They are not built to move the chains on a steady basis. We’re inclined to fade them. Especially since they’re playing on the road.
OSB Prediction: Arizona Cardinals (+172)
Is the Point Spread the Way to Go for the Giants vs. Cardinals Matchup?
Here are the latest NFL point spread betting odds for the Giants vs. Cardinals showdown in Week 2:
- New York Giants, -4.5 (-110)
- Arizona Cardinals, +4.5 (-110)
Betting on the Cardinals to cover the spread against the Giants is the safer play if you’re worried about marrying yourself to the moneyline. Indeed, we could see a scenario in which New York is particularly motivated to win. After all, looking at their schedule, this may be the last winnable game for them over the next many weeks. At the very least, the Giants won’t open as a favorite for their next handful of games.
Nevertheless, we respect that Arizona hasn’t yet entered full-on tank mode. They have a couple of downfield threats (Marquise Brown, anyone?) and have shown the willingness to let their Dobbs air it out. In fact, Dobbs might have more latitude to run his offense than Jones has for New York. That matters.
OSB Prediction: Arizona Cardinals, +4.5 (-110)
Can You Trust Either Team’s Offense After What We Just Watched in Week 1?
Cobbling together a final point total for this game is unbelievably hard. Of course, linemakers continue to find a way. Below you can see the latest over/under betting odds for the Cardinals vs. Giants game:
- Over 39.5 (-110)
- Under 39.5 (-110)
In all honesty, it is virtually impossible to feel good about this betting line. Neither offense impressed during their Week 1 loss. Together, the Giants and Cardinals combined for 16 points. Which, yeah, yikes.
On the bright side, Arizona showed some defensive moxy on passing plays many didn’t expect. And the Giants, meanwhile, still showed the ability to clamp down on certain passing plays, depending on the target.
Relative to how sub-mediocre both offenses look, the faintest defensive effort from either squad should ensure we’re “treated” to a low-scoring affair. Combing for 40 points may not be a tall order in the year 2023 overall, but it’s certainly a big ask for the current versions of the Cardinals and Giants.
OSB Prediction: Under 39.5 (-110)
