Among some of the powerhouse conferences in the nation, the Big 12 always has several teams who make noise on the big stage. With online college football betting quickly nearing, it's time to look at futures for this conference, headlined by the Oklahoma Sooners (+215) and Texas Longhorns (+275). Oklahoma State (+550) and Baylor (+600) aren't far behind, either. Oklahoma also has +4000 odds in the 2022-23 NCAA Football National Championship futures. Oklahoma
The Sooners' roster and coaching staff definitely look different after Lincoln Riley left for USC and took quarterback Caleb Williams with him. But, OU still remains the team to beat in the Big 12. Oklahoma has a schedule that is very manageable, taking on Baylor and Oklahoma State at home while facing Texas at a neutral venue. New offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby has brought one of his former QBs Dillon Gabriel to Norman from UCF and he'll be hoping to find his 2019 form again, where he threw for over 3,600 yards. There will be no shortage of weapons out wide for Gabriel, either. Marvin Mims, Theo Wease, and Drake Stoops are all capable of doing damage in the air and should make the signal-caller's life a lot easier if he can be consistent with his throws. Since the Sooners have a very young running back group, you can expect them to be a pass-heavy offense.
Texas
The Longhorns' offseason was obviously headlined by the addition of Arch Manning, the son of the legendary Peyton Manning. But, joining him in the QB room is Quinn Ewers, who just won the starting job over Hudson Card. Texas finished with a disappointing 5-7 record last season and just 3-6 in conference action, but sportsbooks clearly think they're due for a much better campaign at +275 odds. This has a lot to do with just how stacked this Texas offense is. Yes, they have solid options at quarterback, but the Longhorns also have a possible Heisman candidate at running back in Bijan Robinson, who is a Deebo Samuel-type weapon, capable of killing teams on the ground and in the air. When it comes to the wide receiver room, Texas is absolutely stacked. Isaiah Nayor and Xavier Worthy are legit, while Jordan Whittington is also a threat. They have two very good tight ends as well, with Alabama transfer Jahleel Billingsley being one of them. Considering how many players on the offensive side of the ball can wreak havoc, you simply cannot sleep on Texas in the Big 12 picks.
Oklahoma State
The Oklahoma State Cowboys actually finished in first place in the Big 12 a season ago with an 8-1 conference record and 12-2 overall, only to lose a 21-16 nailbiter to the Baylor Bears in the title game. Nevertheless, OSU should be a good team once again, especially defensively. They allowed a conference-low 16.8 points per contest in 2021 and surrendered under 100 yards rushing per game, too. Collin Oliver and Brock Martin return to Stillwater to wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks for another campaign. Offensively, quarterback Spencer Sanders looked solid last year and threw for a career-best 20 touchdowns to help the Cowboys. His accuracy struggled at times, though, throwing for 12 interceptions. He'll need to clean that up. After facing Central Michigan in Week 1, they'll have a rematch against Baylor in Week 4 on the road.
Baylor
We can't ignore the defending champions. The Bears were an absolute handful on the ground last season, leading the Big 12 with 219.3 rushing yards per contest. They lost both of their top running backs Trestan Ebner and Abram Smith, to the NFL, however, with Taye McWilliams now expected to fill the shoes now. Baylor has two solid options at quarterback who both saw action in 21', with Gerry Bohanon getting most of the snaps, while Blake Shapen was the backup to a certain extent. But, it's a different story in 2022, with Shapen QB1 after shining in the Big 12 championship against Oklahoma State. This team has four manageable games in the first month and could very well be unbeaten before hosting the Cowboys in Week 4.
Big 12 picks
This is actually a tough one. I respect how strong Oklahoma is, but Texas seems like the program that could truly do it big this year. Take the Longhorns to flip the script and win the Big 12 for the first time since 2009.
