The season is nearing the final few weeks of games, so let's explore the 2024 NBA MVP odds using our NBA Props bets page. Let's do a quick breakdown of how the MVP is calculated.
The NBA's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award is decided by a panel of 100 media members who consider only regular-season performances.
The absence of specific criteria for "value" leads to varied interpretations, often favoring players leading dominant teams.
Advanced metrics like win shares and VORP have become crucial in MVP discussions, alongside traditional stats.
MVP moments, consistent availability, and voter fatigue also influence the selection process, as seen with players like Michael Jordan, LeBron James, and Nikola Jokic.

Nikola Jokic
After narrowly missing out on the MVP award to Embiid last season, Jokic has returned with a vengeance, solidifying his position as the NBA's top player this year.
At the beginning of the season, Jokic was a slight favorite over Luka Doncic and Giannis Antetokounmpo in the MVP race.
Since then, he has only strengthened his case, particularly after Embiid's injury, which made Jokic the clear frontrunner with odds in his favor by February.

As we approach the end of the season, it's difficult to imagine any player challenging Jokic for the award, as some sportsbooks have even removed the odds.
Despite Embiid leading the league in Player Efficiency Rating (PER) with 34.96, Jokic is close behind at second with 31.04.
Jokic also leads the league in Player Impact Estimate (21.0) and Win Shares (14.5).
One minor criticism of Jokic is that he ranks 13th in the NBA for points per game at 26.1.
However, he more than compensates for this by being the sole player in the league, averaging at least 26 points, nine assists (9.0), and double-digit rebounds (12.3) per game.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander appeared poised to challenge Jokic in the NBA MVP race, but Jokic's odds have significantly shortened in the past two weeks, leaving SGA with longer odds, moving from +400 to +900.
Despite Gilgeous-Alexander's impressive statistics, such as being second in win shares (14.0), second in points per game (30.8), first in steals (2.1), and third in Player Efficiency Rating (PER) (30.08), it seems he may have run out of time to catch up to Jokic.
If Gilgeous-Alexander hopes to narrow the gap, the Thunder must secure the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference over the Nuggets.
This would bolster their NBA Championship odds and potentially improve SGA's MVP chances.

Luka Doncic
Luka Doncic is slightly lower on the 2024 NBA MVP odds list despite leading the league in scoring with an impressive 34.4 points per game.
Additionally, he's averaging 8.8 rebounds and 9.7 assists per game.
The Mavericks' record of 34-25 does impact his MVP chances, but the team has been on an upswing, winning 8 of their last 10 NBA games.
Luka DonΔiΔ recorded 29 points, 12 rebounds and 13 assists in Utah tonight for his 75th career triple-double, making him one of nine players in NBA history to reach 75 triple-doubles.

Doncic's MVP prospects could be boosted if the Mavericks finish the season strong.
Currently ranked 7th in the West, moving up and avoiding the play-in games by finishing in the top five would undoubtedly bolster his case.
While the odds are favorable, Doncic will also need his teammates to step up for a strong push toward the end of the season.
Anthony Edwards
The Minnesota Timberwolves have emerged as one of the top teams in the Western Conference this season.
It's surprising that such a successful team wouldn't have an MVP candidate.
While the resurgence of Rudy Gobert and Karl-Anthony Towns' return (before his injury) have been pivotal, Anthony Edwards deserves significant credit for the Wolves' achievements.
Serving as the team leader, Edwards unquestionably deserves consideration as an NBA MVP candidate.

However, the key question remains: can he improve his consistency and reduce turnovers?
This is the only factor that seems to be holding Edwards back from a stronger MVP case. He is a longshot but the odds of +12000 are very tempting.
