Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks will be looking to bounce back from a brutal loss to the Orlando Magic on Wednesday as they continue their road trip in DC against the Washington Wizards on Thursday evening. The tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET. Doncic saw his streak of 30+ points end at eight games as he only dropped 24 versus Orlando. The Wizards meanwhile managed to beat the slumping Charlotte Hornets on Monday, despite being without Bradley Beal. He's still in COVID-19 protocols and won't be available here. Mavericks vs Wizards Preview

After losing Jalen Brunson in the offseason, Dallas is showing well. Doncic is playing like the MVP favorite that he is, averaging a ridiculous 36 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 8.3 assists. The most impressive part? He's shooting just 29% from deep. That means Luka is literally doing most of his damage inside. He's led the Mavs to have the second-best offensive rating in the Association en route to a 6-4 record. Meanwhile, Spencer Dinwiddie and Christian Wood are both putting up 15.6 points per night to complement the franchise superstar.

But, the Magic somehow slowed down Doncic on Wednesday, despite being without Paolo Banchero. 24 points are usually good for most players but for the Slovenian, it was an off night. He was just 9 for 29 from the field and 2 for 11 from three-point land. Dinwiddie's 29 points were about the only bright spot. It was the first time this season Dallas scored under 90 points. As a group, the Mavs shot a measly 26% from deep and 38% from the field and got absolutely bodied on the boards, 49-29. There is no question this was the worst game of the campaign for Jason Kidd's squad yet and they'll be hungry to get back out there and respond in a big way, especially Doncic.

The Wizards currently sit at 5-6 which is good for ninth place in the East. They've dropped five of their last seven games and struggle a ton to score the rock, ranking 29th with 107 points per game. Washington is also shooting the triple at a putrid 30.6% clip, which is 28th in the NBA. Bradley Beal is posting averages of 21.6 points, 5.7 assists, and 3.6 rebounds while Kristaps Porzingis is compiling 19.2 points and 8.2 boards per contest. On a more positive note, DC grabbed a much-needed victory Monday against the Hornets, who are in brutal shape at the moment.

Washington's offense stepped up without Beal. Kyle Kuzma dropped a team-high 20 points on 9 for 16 shooting from the field. Porzingis also had 19. Four scorers in total finished in double-figures. Wes Unseld's group shot 52% from the field but just 26% from downtown. Nevertheless, they managed to overcome Charlotte and end a two-game skid. The Wizards now play their next seven games at home, with the likes of Miami, Memphis, and Utah coming to town after Dallas. It'll be a tough stretch but it shouldn't be too long until Beal is back on the floor doing his thing.

Mavericks vs Wizards Prediction

The Mavs are just 3-5 against the spread in 2022-23 and did lose both meetings with the Wizards last season. However, I do think Wednesday was a serious wake-up call for Dallas against a young Magic team. Luka didn't play all that well and I believe he'll show out Thursday and lead his squad to a win. Take the visitors to cover the slim spread.
