Will the odds-on favorite Kyle Larson (+600) take his third checkered flag of the season? Can Chase Elliott (+750) repeat as the winner at Dover? Why is William Byron (+650) laying the second-best odds of anyone? The answers to all this, and more, are just below!
When in Doubt, Kyle Larson is a Good Bet to Win the Wurth 400
Kyle Larson was uncharacteristically hit or miss to start the season. He has "just" four top-10 finishes to his name and is now fourth in the NASCAR Cup Series standings.
Still, Larson has picked it up lately. He's finished first in two of the past four races while racking up more total time as the race leader. With rain in the forecast this weekend at Dover, he looms as an especially good option because of his maneuvering in slicker conditions on mile-long tracks.
Can Chase Elliott Pick Up His First Victory of the 2023 NASCAR Season at Dover?
Chase Elliott currently finds himself circling the drain relative to his usual standards. He arrives at the Wurth 400 in 31st place in the NASCAR Cup Series standings, with only two top-10 finishes (one top five) to his 2023 resume.
That's somewhat concerning. But he has historically raced well on the Dover Motor Speedway track and actually won last year's Wurth 400. Given that he also mustered some time as the race leader at the Geico 500 last week, there's reason to believe his stock may be on the rise.
Why is William Byron Valued So Highly Entering the 2023 Wurth 400?
The odds for William Byron to win the Wurth 400 appear to be riding an early-season high. Byron opened the year with back-to-back victories in March, but he has struggled since. It doesn't help that NASCAR inspected his and teammate Chase Bowman's cars last week and penalized them for apparent violations—the second time that's happened to Byron this year.
The infraction cost Byron serious ground in the standings, and he has publicly voiced his displeasure with the decision. We're not ones to predict revenge tours on the track, and that's not what we're doing here. But Byron has stayed on the periphery through a lot of races, including last week when he finished seventh at the Geico 500.
Better Bet to Win on Sunday: Denny Hamlin or Christopher Bell?
Both Denny Hamlin (+900) and Christopher Bell (+900) are laying 9-to-1 odds to win the Wurth 400. While Bell continues to lead the NASCAR Cup standings, he is no longer accumulating as many pole finishes. He placed eighth at the Geico 500.
Denny Hamlin, of course, didn't fare any better. He placed 17th one week after it looked like he had turned a corner at the NOCO 400. His handful of top-10 finishes aren't enough for us to give him the edge over Bell's season-long results.
Best Dark Horse to Win Sunday's Race
We like Ty Gibbs (+5500) as an out-0f-nowhere pick at the Wurth 500. Indeed, he doesn't have a top-five finish, let alone a pole or first-place flag, to his credit this year. But he is among the racers who have secured four or more top-10 placements.
Skeptics will still point to his lack of experience. This will be the first time Gibbs gets a NASCAR Cup Series start at Dover Motor Speedway. Big whoop. Gibbs has started at Dover twice before as part of the Xfinity racing series—and he finished inside the top five each time.
Official Wurth 400 Prediction
And our best bet to win the 2023 Wurth 400 is...William Byron.
Sure, we wish the payout was a little better for someone who hasn't won since his hot start. At the same time, Byron has earned odds that paint him almost as a co-favorite.
Kyle Larson is the only driver who has led more total laps this season, and while Byron hasn't maintained leads all that long at Dover specifically, he has amassed three top-10 finishes through eight appearances. That's interesting enough for him to get our vote.
OSB Prediction: William Byron (+650)
