OSB Pedro Acosta Has Burst To Come In First At San Marino

The MotoGP riders continue their bonanza of race in September by heading to Italy for the San Marino Grand Prix. Yes, the course is one the Italian riders know well. Betting knows the Italians mostly have an edge on the Sunday races. However, there were a few Spaniards who found a way (see Jorge Martin in 2023). Anyway, We examine a few 2024 MotoGP San Marino Picks worth taking for Sunday's race.

  • What: San Marino Grand Prix
  • When: Sunday, September 8 at 8:00 am EDT
  • Where: Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli - San Marino, Italy

So after Aragon, Jorge Martin went from down five points to up 23 in the standings. That is correct. Martin racked up 29 points while Bagnaia collected just one. Marc Marquez finally pulled off a race win and grabbed 37 points to take back third in the race for the title. Yes, things constantly change. Does San Marino have a twist given the twist happened in 2023? The table is below as always.

Does Aragon Set The Stage For San Marino?

Does Aragon set the stage for San Marino?  So, the 2024 MotoGP San Marino Picks come straight off the race at Aragon. We finally kept expecting Marc Marquez to win a race. It happened! Marquez helped complete a 1-2-3 sweep by the Spaniards. Jorge Martin finished second and Pedro Acosta held on for third place on Sunday. The more impressive thing may have been Marquez fending off Martin by almost five seconds!

As crazy as this sounds, the question has to be asked. Could something like this happen again on Sunday in Italy? San Marino felt last year like Francesco Bagnaia was going to three-peat. Then, the unthinkable happened. Jorge Martin crashed the party and took the race. He was fast throughout. Martin won the pole, won the Sprint, and then easily took the race too. Bagnaia wound up on the podium taking third both times.

San Marino rolls in at 4.226 kilometers and 16 turns. Riders will fire out for 27 laps on Sunday. The two long straightaways will test the nerve of some drivers. Meanwhile, the big question may be can Bagnaia avoid mistakes and find that extra half second particularly later in this race. Last year, Bagnaia was fast in the middle laps but faded towards the end. Martin held off Bagnaia by a little over 3.8 seconds.

Okay, the Ducati tops the hierarchy for Italy. Currently, showers and thunderstorms are likely in San Marino for Sunday. This means literally anything can happen especially if the weather starts to go downhill earlier in the afternoon. Check the weather reports often as the race draws closer.

2024 MotoGP San Marino Picks Are All Over The Place

The 2024 MotoGP San Marino Picks are all over the place for Sunday. Yes, Francesco Bagnaia could figure this out. However, could this race be between Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez?  Does the rain bring back Pedro Acosta and Brad Binder into the mix? See where the dilemma roll in? The Sprint should be a coin flip between Martin and Marquez. Sunday again has riders like Bagnaia and Bastianini hoping for some dry weather.

Yes, Martin has a cushion between himself and Bagnaia but it is only 23 points. It makes guessing a winner more and more adventurous. Bagnaia can win this race on Sunday as he did in 2021 and 2022. It would be his eighth win of 2024. Unless something improbable happens, Bagnaia would not be able to overtake Martin yet again.

The problem with the 2024 MotoGP San Marino Picks are blatant at this point. After the top four choices, there feels like the long shots have a chance especially with the potential for adverse conditions. Accidents and DNF's could rise dramatically. Here would be an interesting time to take a look at Pedro Acosta who has shown flashes and just finished third last week at Aragon..

So How About Another San Marino Pick?

The 2024 MotoGP San Marino Picks may have another shot to take. While there is so much apprehension and hesitation, which of the four contenders could win on Sunday on this Italian track? Can Bagnaia stay upright? He was awful at both the Sprint and Race at Aragon. Jorge Martin has not finished with less than 12 points on any weekend? That has happened to Bagnaia twice now. A third time is unlikely but one never knows.

Unfortunately, the problem with Martin is he due for one of those down weeks? Then, there is Marc Marquez. Could Marquez win on back-to-back weeks? Yes, these are strange times indeed. Then, there is Bastianini who did race at San Marino in 2023. However, in 2022, Bastianini lost to Bagnaia by the most narrow of amounts (0.034 seconds). The Italian did win at Silverstone in less-than-ideal conditions.

Alright, this keeps coming back to something that anyone in the top four could come out victorious on Sunday. If the weather stays dry, the feeling is Bagnaia merely has to stay upright. His factory Ducati can deliver the goods again and again. Simply, the two-time champion often bounces back. The Austria race is a great example after the Silverstone dud. It is the time for Bagnaia to find a way on Sunday.
