Racing at Belmont Park may be on hiatus through construction, but the Grade 1, $750,000 Belmont Derby is still alive and well as one of the best three-year-old turf races of the year. The race happens at Aqueduct this year, and will be conducted at 1 3/16 miles over their turf course.
With an exciting international field, the Belmont Derby is always one of the most important horse racing betting events of the summer season. It is also the beginning of the prestigious New York Turf Triple, which continues through the summer with the Saratoga Derby (G1) and concludes with the Jockey Club Derby.
Since it started 2014, the Belmont Derby has seen winners from both the United States and abroad. Belmont Derby Handicapping

Belmont Derby Top Selections
In a field of five, pace means even more than usual. A horse with speed, the ability to handle the ground, and the ability to carry it will be a major threat in this race. Enter Trikari, who has the early speed to be in the driver’s seat in the Belmont Derby, but can also stalk and pounce if someone outjumps him early.
The Graham Motion trainee was a 47-1 long shot when he upset the American Turf (G2) two starts back. Even though he was defeated in the Penn Mile (G2) next out, he missed by only a neck over that shorter trip. The stretch out in trip should help him along.
The ground should also play to Trikari’s favor. There was a significant amount of rain the week leading into the American Turf, meaning Trikari can handle some cut in the ground. With rain in the forecast for both Friday and Saturday in New York City, he gets an advantage over other foes who do better with firmer ground.
Belmont Derby Exotics Choices
If anyone does outjump Trikari, it is probably White Palomino, who set the pace in the local prep, the Pennine Ridge (G2), before getting caught by Legend of Time. It was his first try against winners, and he acquitted himself well. Now he has that experience, and he stretches back out to 1 3/16 miles, the distance of his maiden win. That win over Kentucky-good ground also suggests some rain shouldn’t hurt.
Royal Majesty appeals most of the rest. Trained by Bill Mott, this colt should love 1 3/16 miles: he is by Frankel out of Crown Queen, a Smart Strike half to Royal Delta. Even though his wins have come from midfield, he ran well in a stalking shape last out when third in the Pennine Ridge. And, with his allowance win two back coming over good ground at Keeneland, he does not need it perfectly firm.
This makes him more interesting than Legend of Time, whose flop in the American Turf suggests he is the kind of international horse who comes to the United States because he needs firmer ground, and Endlessly, who has never tried any turf that wasn’t California-firm, and will have to come from a long-looking last last in a short field.
