Belmont Derby Handicapping
Now that you have your online sportsbook account set up, it is time to get to know the Belmont Derby field! These are the horses, both favorites and long shots, to keep in mind:
Belmont Derby Favorites
The likely favorite in the Belmont Derby is Stone Age, for trainer Aidan OāBrien. He has won two editions of the Belmont Derby, and Stone Age is much like OāBrienās 2021 winner Bolshoi Ballet in the sense that he was well fancied into the Epsom Derby, faltered then, and next shipped to Belmont. However, Stone Age has to prove he can either win off the front end or contend with more aggressive American speed.
The more interesting of the Epsom Derby contingent is Nations Pride, who has already proven the tactical speed that Stone Age has not. He fits a similar profile as an up-and-comer who may have found the Epsom Derby too much, too soon. But, he is very well proven at a mile and a quarter and his trainer Charlie Appleby has been red-hot when shipping out to North America.
Emmanuel will likely be the best-bet horse among the American contingent, but he still has questions to answer. He comes from the red-hot Todd Pletcher barn and he looked nice in his turf debut in the Pennine Ridge. However, he got a cozy trip on the lead in that race. With Classic Causeway in the mix for the Belmont Derby, he will have a much tougher time getting his trip.
Belmont Derby Value Horses
Tiz the Bomb is the best bet in the Belmont Derby. He is switching back to his best surface, the grass, after a season of running on dirt and Tapeta. His better races have come on Tapeta, which is unsurprising for a turf horse since that form often transfers. Tiz the Bomb is pace-versatile, and ran well enough in the Breedersā Cup Juvenile Turf (G1) last year to like again in top turf company.
Limited Liability still needs to prove his class, but he is an improving sort who could be building to top-class form. Though he was only third in the Pennine Ridge last out, he was gaining well late, he should get a more contested pace to run at this time. His pedigree appeals for the ten-furlong trip as well, as he is by Kittenās Joy out of a full sister to nice turf mare Onus.
Trainer Todd Pletcher has been on fire, and though his first-stringer is an underlay, there is a great argument for using his āBā entry Grand Sonata. He has yet to run poorly in seven starts, and his tactical versatility will be useful in a field of 13 horses. Especially since his pedigree appeals for the step up to a mile and a quarter, he should be a good price horse for exotics.
