One of the best tournaments of the PGA Tour will take center stage starting on Thursday as the 2023 RBC Canadian Open gets underway at Oakdale Country Club in Toronto. It might be hard to focus on what actually happens after the shocking news that the PGA is merging with LIV Golf but nonetheless, lots of fans will be tuning in here. Rory McIlroy, who has won the last two editions, is the favorite here at +600. The purse for this tourney is $9 million. This event isn't always at the Oakdale Country Club, either. It's been at 37th different courses in history.

Tournament Preview

While this is one of the most well-liked tournaments on the Tour, there will be a major shadow over it this weekend. After constantly expressing their dislike for LIV Golf, Jay Monahan and the PGA decided Tuesday to team up with the Saudi Arabia-backed league, which has angered a ton of people across the sport. The worst part? Most of the PGA players found out on Twitter. They weren't even told about it.

That being said, there is still golf to be played. McIlroy is undoubtedly the first one to focus on, having enjoyed no shortage of success north of the border. He finished 19 under last year en route to the title and in 2019, was 22 under. Dominant, to say the least. As for current form, the Irishman finished tied for seventh in the last two tournaments at the PGA Championship and The Memorial Tournament last weekend. He's certainly trending in the right direction.

Hatton is another name to definitely keep an eye on. The 31-year-old UK native was second at the PLAYERS Championship, third at Wells Fargo, and fifth at AT&T Byron Nelson. In total, he has five top-10 finished on the PGA Tour this season. While he's yet to actually win a tournament, it feels like it could be his time. Hatton has got so close in prior events. However, he did miss the cut at the RBC Canadian Open in 2022.

Sam Burns is a five-time PGA Tour champion and continues to enjoy a respectable season. The American won the World Golf Championships and has five top-10 finishes for the 2022-23 campaign. But, Burns isn't in the greatest shape lately. He missed the cut at the Wells Fargo Championship and the PGA Tour Championship before finishing sixth in his most recent tournament, the Charles Schwab Challenge. He's lacked consistency at times so it's hard to know what Burns we'll get come Thursday.

Cameron Young is one of the favorites at Oakdale, but he doesn't exactly have much of a track record. The New York native has never won in 41 PGA Tour events and this season, has finished in the top 10 only three times. His last event was the PGA Championship where Young missed the cut. Prior to that? 51 and 59th place finishes.

Corey Conners is one of several Canadians in the field. His results have been up and down throughout the year, but there are some definite bright spots. He won the Valero Texas Open, finished eighth at the Wells Fargo Championship, and locked down 12th at the PGA Championship. Conner was also sixth at this even a year ago, although it was at a different course.

Justin Rose is another intriguing golfer to watch in Toronto. He's made the cut in six straight tournaments and can make it seven at the Canadian Open. He was ninth at the PGA Championship and 12th at Charles Schwab. As for last year, Rose was fifth at the event. The 42-year-old is one of the most experienced golfers on the circuit. He's always capable of coming up with a win.

RBC Canadian Open Picks

I got two bets that look good here. First, we'll go with the reigning champion. McIlroy absolutely loves playing in Canada and evidently excels in this tournament. At +600, it's worth a look. Secondly, we'll go Hatton to finish top-10. He is playing very well and should be in the mix here.
