- When: Thursday, July 20th to Sunday, July 23rd

It's major time. The 2023 British Open officially begins on Thursday, July 20th, and runs through Sunday, July 23rd at the Royal Liverpool in the United Kingdom. All eyes are on Rory McIlroy, who just won the Scottish Open last weekend and did capture his third major trophy at this course once upon a time. The Irishman heads into the event as a co-favorite alongside Scottie Scheffler at +800, while the likes of Masters winner John Rahm (+1300), Brooks Koepka (+2000), reigning champion Cameron Smith (+2100), and Xander Schauffele (+2200) round out the expected frontrunners. Tournament Preview
Rory McIlroy (+800)
McIlroy is still one of the best golfers in the world, but he hasn't won a major in nine years, last coming out victorious at the 2014 PGA Championship. He also appears to be in the best possible form to end that cold skid. As previously mentioned, McIlroy finished two under at the Scottish Open en route to a win and has finished within the top-10 in two majors this year in the US Open and the PGA Championship. He also tends to enjoy lots of success at the British Open, landing in the top-10 in four of his last six appearances here. Anything outside of that would be considered a disappointment, but the crown is surely the primary focus.
Scottie Scheffler (+800)
Scheffler could very well be the most consistent golfer on the PGA Tour this season. He's won twice in 23' at the Phoenix Open and THE PLAYERS Championship and even won the Green Jacket at the 2022 Masters. Scheffler has finished top-five in seven consecutive events, which is impressive in itself. His last four appearances went: 3rd, 3rd, 4th, 3rd. Talk about in-form. Scheffler was 21st at the British Open a year ago, but you simply cannot count him out considering how well he's swinging it right now, hence the favorable odds.
Jon Rahm (+1300)
2022-23 can be considered a breakout year for Rahm, who has four wins to his name including one at Augusta, which is by far the most notable. He didn't partake in the Scottish Open and hasn't had much success at the British Open, only finishing within the top 10 finish in six starts and was 34th a year ago. The Spaniard has also cooled off since winning the Masters, barely cracking the top 10 in recent tournaments. Despite the third-best odds, Rahm is probably a fade this weekend.
Brooks Koepka (+2000)
Despite jumping ship for LIV Golf, Koepka proved he hasn't missed a beat. He was second behind Rahm at Augusta and then won the PGA Championship. A 17th-place finish at the US Open wasn't ideal, but you cannot overlook the other two results. While Koepka didn't make the cut at The Open in 22' he was sixth the year before that.
Cameron Smith (+2100)
How could we not discuss the defending champ? Smith finished 20 under en route to the title, his only major win to date. Also on the LIV Golf Tour now, the Aussie was 34th at The Masters, ninth at the PGA Championship, and fourth at the US Open. Smith is also coming off his first LIV win in London, which should give him some much-needed momentum heading into the title defense. He definitely has a chance at Royal Liverpool in the 2023 British Open futures.
Xander Schauffele (+2200)
Schauffele might be among the frontrunners, but he hasn't won a single tournament in 2022-23 and sits 12th in the FedEx standings. His recent results don't exactly scream contender either, finishing outside of the top-10 in five straight events. He was 42nd in the Scottish Open last weekend but was 10th at the US Open, which is promising. Schauffele was 15th at the British Open in 2022.
Picks
It's incredibly difficult to predict who can win any major, which is exactly why the most logical move for bettors is to put money down on a few different options. The two that I'm eyeing are Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler. Yes, the co-favorites, but I do believe both guys are going to turn up and perform.
