2024 Chinese Grand Prix Betting Picks 04-21-2024

The next stop on the F1 roadshow is the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix from the Shanghai International Circuit. The betting favorite is Max Verstappen, with the triple-world champion at -500 to win his fourth race of the season. In our latest Formula 1 betting picks, we tell you if Verstappen is going to win again and what the best bets to place are.

  • What: 2024 Chinese Grand Prix - Round 5
  • Where: Shanghai International Circuit, Jiading District, Shanghai
  • When: Sunday, April 21st, 2024
  • Time: 3 a.m ET
  • Laps: 56
  • Track Length: 5.451 km
  • Race Distance: 305.066 km

This will be the first time Formula 1 has been to China since the 2019 Chinese Grand Prix. Lewis Hamilton was the winner of that race, but a lot has changed since those days of Mercedes's dominance.

Max Verstappen and his Red Bull team are now the team to beat in the F1 paddock. And with Verstappen back to winning ways in Japan, normal service has quickly resumed following his shock retirement less than five laps into the Australian Grand Prix.

Furthermore, Red Bull finished one and two in Japan. Not only was Verstappenā€™s car back to its best at Suzuka, but Sergio Perez also had a good weekend and finished second on the podium for the third time this season.

Ferrari underlined their credentials as the closest challenger in the paddock to Red Bull by finishing third and fourth in Japan. Carlos Sainz continued his impressive form with a third-place finish, again outdriving his teammate Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari No.1 driver had to settle for fourth.

Who is the favorite to win the 2024 Chinese Grand Prix?

Max Verstappenā€™s woes in Australia didnā€™t have any effect on his odds to win the Japanese Grand Prix. The Dutchman went into the Suzuka race as the favorite at -500, and he has the same odds to win again in Shanghai.

Verstappen has now been -500 for three successive races. He was also slated at those odds to win in Australia as well as Japan.

Second in the betting to win in China is his Red Bull teammate Sergio Perez at +900. Perez was +1100 ahead of Japan. So his impressive performance at Suzuka has been noted by the best F1 betting sites.

Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are joint-third in the betting at +1400. The Ferrari duo were both +1600 to win in Japan. Again, the bookmakers seem to have noted that they are the likely beneficiaries of any Red Bull mishaps.

Lando Norris is the leader of the rest of the drivers. The McLaren No.1 is +3300, putting him ahead of Oscar Piastri, Lewis Hamilton, and George Russell, who are all at +4000.

Betting to win the 2024 Driversā€™ Championship

After bouncing back with a win at the Japanese Grand Prix, the latest Formula 1 betting online odds on Verstappen to win the 2024 Driversā€™ Championship are -2000.

Already heā€™s not worth backing to win, and the attention has already switched to the betting without Verstappen, where Sergio Perez leads the way at -225. Behind Perez is Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc, both at +450.

Sainz has seen his odds tumbling dramatically since he returned to F1 after missing the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix with appendicitis.

Our 2024 Chinese Grand Prix betting picks

We still canā€™t justify betting on Max Verstappen to win at -500. We all know he is likely to win, so we understand anybody wishing to bet on him.

But we are not backing him at those odds and have named some alternative race picks below.

Our betting pick to win the Sprint Race

Elsewhere, the Chinese Grand Prix is hosting the first Sprint race of the 2024 season. Again, Max Verstappen is the favorite, this time at the slightly more favorable odds of -400. Nevertheless, still not worth backing.

The Sprint is a shorter and more open race. In 2023, Max Verstappen won four of the six Sprint races. Compare that to his record in the actual F1 races, and it shows that his rivals have a better chance in the shorter format.

So for a purely speculative bet, we are backing Lando Norris to win the Sprint at +3300. The British driver has been in good form in 2024. Itā€™s just that his car isnā€™t as competitive as it was in 2023.

We are also going to back Carlos Sainz (-115) to beat Charles Leclerc (-115) in the head-to-head matchups.

Sainz has finished ahead of Leclerc in all three races he has driven this year. There is also zero chance of Sainz following team orders and letting the Ferrari No.1 driver through if his team asks him to. He's driving for his future career, and he also has a point to prove to the Ferrari hierarchy.

Carlos Sainz to finish ahead of Charles Leclerc is our Chinese Grand Prix betting pick.
