Betting to win the Drivers’ Championship without Verstappen

Lando Norris will have to take a good long hard look at himself at the end of this season and work out where it all went wrong.

He has had the best car in the paddock for the second half of the season and the beating of Max Verstappen. But thanks to a series of errors, Norris missed out on the Drivers’ Championship and is now in danger of missing out on P2.

His latest slip-up came last week when the McLaren driver failed to slow down for Yellow Flag.

The punishment was a 10-second stop/go penalty. This resulted in Norris dropping from second, where he was competing with Verstappen for the win, to the back of the field.

Using the skill and speed we know Norris has, he managed to work his way back up to P10 and claim the fastest lap. But the error cost him at least P2, which was 18 points, and possibly P1, 25 points.

Adding insult to injury, the penalty allowed Leclerc to finish P2 and claim three more points than he expected.

The upshot is that Norris could end up missing out on P2 in the Drivers’ Championship. He does hold an 8-point lead over Leclerc, but Norris should have this position in the bag already.

2024 Constructors’ Championship betting

Another title still to be decided is the 2024 Constructors’ Championship.

Red Bull started the season as the odds-on favorites to win it. But the emergence of the McLaren car, along with the disappearance of Red Bull No.2 Sergio Perez, means the pre-season favorites aren’t even in the top two, never mind winning it.

McLaren is the front-runner and the favorite to win. But even they are now making hard work of getting the job done.

Their rival Ferrari has improved in recent weeks. They recorded a 1-2 finish in the US and a 1-3 in Mexico. Gradually, they have eaten away at McLaren’s lead.

McLaren has consistently picked up enough points to hold off the Ferrari charge. But with the finishing line in sight last weekend, they made a mess of things again - this time with the error made by Norris when he failed to slow for the Yellow Flag.

McLaren still holds a 21-point lead. But they are giving hope to Ferrari.

Ahead of Qatar, McLaren was -450, they are now -900. Ferrari was +333. They are now +550. As bad a Sunday as it was for McLaren, and Norris in particular, it’s still their title to lose.

Our 2024 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix betting picks

With P2 in the Drivers’ Championship and P1 in the Constructors’ Championship both still up for grabs, the pressure will be on McLaren and Ferrari this weekend.

Any McLaren to win the race is +150, and any Ferrari is +275.

But, with both teams susceptible to mistakes when under pressure, that might open the door for another race win for Max Verstappen.

The Dutchman is finishing the season strong. He has won two of the last three races, and he would love nothing more than to finish the season with another win in the iconic night race in Abu Dhabi.

For a side bet, why not look at Carlos Sainz?

Yes, he’s part of the Ferrari team trying to win the Constructors’ Championship. But Sainz is also in his last race for the team before being replaced by Lewis Hamilton for next season.

Sainz won’t be following team orders this weekend if he has a chance of victory. So he is worth a small wager.
