The bigger picture

The F1 season is entering the home straight. The Singapore Grand Prix is Round 18 of 24, and things are now getting critical at the top of the drivers’ championship.

Max Verstappen still leads the championship. But his lead is being nibbled away at with every passing race.

In the 2024 Constructors’ Championship, McLaren is now in the lead. The British team assumed the top spot after their two drivers recorded first and fourth-place finishes in Baku.

Their combined 38 points trumped the ten Verstappen won for Red Bull.

McLaren has 476 points. Red Bull have 456. The crucial point is that McLaren has two drivers picking up points every week, and Red Bull has just one.

This makes a Constructors’ Championship win for McLaren almost a certainty. And this is backed up in the latest betting with McLaren the -1000 betting favorite. Something unthinkable at the beginning of the season.

Red Bull is +550 and Ferrari is +1600. As things stand, Ferrari looks the bigger threat and we can see them finishing second in this championship, with Red Bull in third.

Who is the favorite to win the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix?

Lando Norris is the favorite in the latest betting to win the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix at +175.

The British driver had a poor weekend in Baku. His finishing position of 4th might not sound too bad.

But he started from 16th on the grid. The truth is that Norris had lost the race before it had even begun.

There are joint second-favorites to win the Singapore Grand Prix. The bookmakers can’t separate Oscar Piastri and Charles Leclerc. The duo are both +350.

Fourth in the betting to win the race is Carlos Sainz at +700, and Max Verstappen is fifth at +900.

Outside of the top five, George Russell and Lewis Hamilton are both +1600. Sergio Perez is +3300.

The Red Bull No.2 is again at shortened odds due to the Singapore Grand Prix being held on a street circuit.

Betting to win the 2024 Drivers’ Championship

Including this weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, there are now only seven races left.

With Max Verstappen and Red Bull misfiring again in Azerbaijan, it could be said that Verstappen has seven races left to cling onto his lead in the championship.

But not for the first time this season, Lando Norris failed to capitalize on Verstappen's woes fully.

Starting from 16th on the grid, Norris drove a good race to finish fourth. His teammate Oscar Piastri won the race starting from second on the grid.

The Australians's win in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix was his second of the season. He has now stood on top of the podium the same number of times as Norris (twice each).

The bigger point here is that Piastri proved that the McLaren car was well-equipped to handle the Baku street circuit. So it must have been Norris who underperformed in qualifying, as opposed to the McLaren car.

The upshot is that Norris picked up 13 points for his fourth-place finish. Three more than Verstappen who gained ten for finishing in fifth place.

Piastri got 25 for the win. The race had a feeling of what might have been for Norris. Yet again!

Verstappen now has 313 points. Norris sits on 254. The lead is down to 59.

Ahead of the Azerbaijan race, Verstappen was -190 to win the 2024 Drivers’ Championship and Norris was +135.

After the race, Verstappen is -225, with Norris at +175. The bookmakers see it as a marginal gain for the triple-world champion.

Our 2024 Singapore Grand Prix betting picks

The Marina Bay circuit is slightly shorter than the one the drivers had to deal with in Baku last weekend. At 4.94 km long, it’s one of the longer circuits. Last weekend’s circuit was 6.003 km.

Conditions will differ greatly as well. The Singapore road circuit is more bumpy, and with the conditions very humid, the race will take a lot out of the drivers physically and mentally.

That said, McLaren and Ferrari are the two teams who have produced the better performances in recent weeks. Mercedes have dropped off, and Max Verstappen has only managed a sixth (Italy) and fifth (Azerbaijan) in his last two races.

The situation is also getting critical now for Lando Norris. If he is going to win the championship, he has to start winning races now.

The McLaren car is the fastest on the circuit. But again, like last weekend, we can’t trust Norris.

So again, any McLaren car to win is our Singapore Grand Prix betting pick.
