Drivers' Championship still in the balance

The 2024 F1 season returns this weekend with the United States Grand Prix. This is now the business end of the season. Including the race from Austin, only six races remain this season.

Triple-world champion Max Verstappen has a 52-point lead at the top of the 2024 Drivers’ Championship. Verstappen has 331 points. His closest rival is Lando Norris with 279 points.

Norris has been steadily closing the gap in recent weeks. But despite Verstappen’s struggles with his Red Bull car, Norris hasn’t closed the gap as much as he should have. His win in the last race in Singapore was only the young British driver’s third of the season.

As for Max Verstappen, he hasn’t won a race since Round 10 in Spain.

Norris may be gaining slowly on Verstappen. But he is now running out of races. Any mistakes from Red Bull need to be punished to the maximum from now until the end of the season. If they aren’t, Verstappen will win his fourth- successive Drivers’ Championship.

Who is the favorite to win the 2024 United States Grand Prix?

Red Bull have added significant upgrades to their car ahead of the 2024 United States Grand Prix.

Despite this, Lando Norris is still the favorite to win in Austin at +100.

The biggest problem we have as punters is we won’t know how effective the upgrades are until the cars are out on the circuit.

But one thing we do know is that Norris beat Verstappen by over 20 seconds in the last round in Singapore. The gap between Norris and Verstappen may close a bit in Austin. But it is highly unlikely that the Red Bull upgrades will bridge that huge gap in such a short space of time.

The bookmakers do have Max Verstappen as the second favorite at +450. His odds are more than likely based on his second-place finish in Singapore, rather than the upgrades to his underperforming car.

Elsewhere, Oscar Piastri is the third favorite at +500, and Charles Leclerc is at +650.

The bookmakers then go +1600 on Lewis Hamilton, George Russell, and Carlos Sainz. Anybody interested in Sergio Perez can get +5000 on the missing Red Bull No.2 driver to win the race.

Our 2024 United States Grand Prix betting picks

First up, we like the chances of Lewis Hamilton this weekend.

The legendary British driver will be keen to end his driving days with Mercedes on a high. Like Red Bull, Mercedes has also made some significant upgrades to its car for the remainder of the season.

Furthermore, Lewis Hamilton finished second behind Max Verstappen in two of the last three races (2021 and 2022) in Austin.

Hamilton also crossed the line second behind Verstappen in 2024 but was later disqualified after his car (and Leclerc’s) failed the post-race plank test.

Disqualified or not, Lewis Hamilton still finished second on the track. He knows this circuit well and as a result, is our pick to finish in the top three.

US Grand Prix winner pick

Moving onto our race winner pick, and assuming it’s not Lewis Hamilton, who is it most likely to be?

Any McLaren (Norris or Piastri) is -175 to win the race. McLaren cars have won three of the four most recent races. Two wins went to Norris, and one to Piastri.

Unfortunately, the odds of -175 are probably now too short to back in this market. But the bet is the most likely winner and we wouldn’t put anybody off wagering on it.

For the better value betting odds, we are just going for Lando Norris.

The young Brit knows he can’t afford any more mistakes if he is to win the 2024 World Championship. He won in Singapore at a canter and knows his car is superior to the rest of the cars in the paddock.

Furthermore, McLaren has asked Oscar Piastri to support Norris in his bid to become the 20024 World Champion.

If the two cars are one and two on the road with Piastri in the lead, the Aussie will be asked to move aside for Norris. And if the Australian is second behind Norris, he will not be allowed to attack his British teammate, and will also be required to hold off the third-placed car.

Lando Norris to win the 2024 United States Grand Prix is our betting pick.
