The F1 roadshow has crossed Europe to the border of Asia for the next installment of the 2024 Drivers’ Championship. The 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix is Round 17 of the championship, and the race promises to have a big say in the outcome of this season’s championship.

In the last race in Monza, yet again, Lando Norris failed to capitalize on a pole position start and could only manage a third-place finish behind winner Charles Leclerc and the second-placed Oscar Piastri.

Furthermore, Norris failed to capitalize on the problems that Red Bull and Max Verstappen were having. Championship leader Verstappen struggled to a sixth-place finish in Italy. But instead of getting 25 points for the win, Norris only managed 15 for finishing third.

If Lando Norris is to steal the 2024 Drivers’ Championship away from Verstappen, he really needs to start cashing in now, as he will soon find that time is running out for him.

Who is the favorite to win the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix?

Lando Norris is the favorite in the latest betting to win the 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.

Despite not being able to hold a pole position lead past the first corner, and only having won two races this season, Norris is just +120 to win in Baku.

Behind Norris, there has been a seismic change. Max Verstappen is not second in the betting. He is fourth.

Second in the betting to win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is Charles Leclerc at +500, with Oscar Piastri the third favorite at +550.

Max Verstappen is +650. He was the +275 second favorite to win in Monza in the last race. That is a shift in the betting that was unthinkable just a few short weeks ago.

Elsewhere, Carlos Sainz is +1000, with the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton at +1400 and George Russell at +1600.

One other big mover in the betting is Sergio Perez. Yes, remember him?

The Red Bull No.2 driver started the season as the second favorite in the betting to win the Drivers’ Championship. But Perez has disappeared without a trace in recent weeks.

Well, this week, according to the bookies, Perez is back in with a chance of winning. Perez opened up at +6600 to win the Italian Grand Prix. To win the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Perez is +2500.

The reason for this shift in odds? Perez performs better on road circuits.

Betting to win the 2024 Drivers’ Championship

Lando Norris and his McLaren team dominated Round 15 in the Netherlands. That domination was expected to continue into Round 16 at Monza.

But instead, upgrades to the Ferrari - along with Norris losing the lead at the first corner - saw Charles Leclerc win his second race of the season.

Max Verstappen could only finish sixth as his car and team suffered another chastening weekend.

As a result, Verstappen now sits atop the Drivers’ Championship with 303 points. Lando Norris is second on 241, and Charles Leclerc is third on 217.

Verstappen’s lead has been eaten into with every passing race recently. But at the moment, it’s only small nibbles, not huge chunks.

In the betting to win the driver’s championship, Max Verstappen is -190, with Lando Norris +135.

Either the bookmakers feel that Charles Leclerc is too far behind, or that the Ferrari upgrades won’t lead to long-term success as the Monégasque driver is +5000 in third place.

Oscar Piastri is the fourth favorite at +6600.

The bookmakers clearly see it as a two-horse race between Verstappen and Norris. And like with the points, the gap in the betting is closing with every passing race.

Our 2024 Azerbaijan Grand Prix betting picks

The Baku street circuit is similar in length to Monza, but as we know, street circuits greatly differ from conventional race circuits.

The narrow roads make overtaking notoriously difficult, and along with the tight turns in Baku, the drivers all have to be extremely accurate with every maneuver they undertake.

Team tactics also have to be spot-on. With fewer passing opportunities, getting pitstop strategies correct is crucial.

In recent weeks, McLaren has clearly had the edge when it comes to setting its car up to win a race. We expect this to continue this weekend.

But as Norris can’t be trusted to hold a lead from pole position past the first corner, we think the safer option is to back any McLaren to win the race.
