Full Breakdown of the Rules for the Rocket League World Cup
The Esports World Cup is a new venture backed by Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Tourism and coordinated in partnership with the Esports World Cup Foundation. The tournament is replacing the Gamers8 Festival, and it is set to be one of the biggest undertakings in esports history.
Over the course of roughly eight weeks—the event started on July 3 and lasts until August 25— there will end up being 22 different video game titles that fall under the World Cup umbrella.
That includes the Rocket League bracket, inside of which will be two separate stages. To start, 16 teams will be divided into four groups. The initial games will follow a double-elimination format (or GSL format). Every match during this time will be best-of-five.
At the end of group play, the top two teams from each group advance to the playoffs. This bracket will follow a single elimination format, across best-of-seven showdowns, until the final team standing is crowned the Rocket League Esports World Cup champion.
And for those who don’t yet know: Rocket League is a “vehicular soccer video game” that launched in 2015 has been mainstream basically ever since?
Should Gentle Mates Alpine be Favored to Win the Whole Tournament
Gentle Mates Alpine (+375) is a fledgling organization, and yet they’re already making plenty of waves. Back in April, they actually won the Grand Final 2024 Rocket League Championship Series’ Major 1.
Many have become exceedingly high on them ever since. And it’s not hard to see why.
Gentle Mates Alpine is known for making quick starts and putting opponents on the defensive. And while their offense can be a little singular at times, France’s Enzo “Seikoo” has proven he could shoulder most of the burden on his own in high-stakes.
In fact, during the Grand Final at the Rocket League Championship series Major 1, Enzo notched all two of Gentle Mates Alpine’s scores.
Which Team is the Better Bet at the Esports World Cup: G2 Stride, Falcons or BDS?
Less than a week out from the World Cup, G2 Stride (+450), BDS (+450) and Falcons (+500) all have identical odds to win the Rocket League bracket. And we don’t expect the separation between these three to increase at all during this time.
That raises the question: Which one’s the biggest threat of all?
To be honest, we’re somewhat surprised BDS’ Rocket League World Cup odds are this close to the top. Most believe you’ll have to go through Gentle Mates Alpine at some point, and BDS was thrashed, 4-0, during their last meeting with them.
The Falcons, meanwhile, have won their past 10 matches, dating back to an incredible performance at Rocket Championship League Series Major 2 earlier this summer. And yes, one of those victories came over Gentle Mates Alpine.
And as for G2 Stride, they have shown themselves to be extremely frisky. The aggression of BeastMode coupled with the setup abilities of Daniel make them a tough out for anyone.
In the end, we’re more intrigued by the Falcons. They’re the group that’s already beaten the odds-on favorite. And beyond that, they have a case to be odds-on favorites themselves.
Dark Horse Contender to Keep an Eye On
Truthfully, we’re not even sure we’d call this team a dark horse in the traditional sense. And yet, it’s laying dark horse odds.
Limitless (+6000) enter as 60-to-1 underdogs. As it turns out, those are actually the third longest Rocket League World Cup odds for the entire field.
That doesn’t make a ton of sense to us. Limitless hasn’t lost since SSA Open Qualifier 4. And that happened all the way back in April.
Of course, Limitless hasn’t exactly faced the stiffest competition during this time. Their risk factor is certainly higher than most could-be contenders. Even so, they still feel undervalued at 60-to-1.
Esports World Cup Rocket League Prediction
And our winner is…Falcons.
This will likely take a great deal of people by surprise. We get it.
But we don’t trust G2 Stride at the highest level, and there’s been a boom-or-bust feel to the way Gentle Mates Alpine plays.
If we had to select an alternative, the latter would be our pick. Gentle Mates Alpine is a juggernaut during any given match. But we prefer teams with better stamina in best-of-five and best-of-seven setups. And our pick to win the Rocket League World Cup has that in spades.
