And even pre-2010, only two Spider-Man movies ever achieved that feat for Marvel. Therefore, history is against Marvel here.

Not only that, but MCU is amid a cold streak. Audiences have not responded well to the MCU Phase 4 and 5, with the most recent one — Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania — being dubbed the worst one yet. Box-office numbers are still high, but they’re in a downtrend compared to the past movies. So the question becomes, how can the next Guardians movie turn things around?

Welp, most of all, because this film is being marketed as a finale. A send-off not only for the band of misfit characters but also for the series creator, James Gunn. He’s overseeing the revamp of DC’s superhero franchises and that makes any future collabs with Marvel a no-no. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

This movie marks the seventh installment of the Mission Impossible franchise. We think it’s a sneaky choice in this bet because of the “Tom Cruise Effect.”

Whereas Marvel is cold, Cruise is red-hot. This will be the famed actor’s first film since the incredible success of Top Gun: Maverick, which earned the No. 1 spot at the 2022 box office. Cruise has confirmed this one, as well as Dead Recking Part Two (to be released in 2024), will be the finale for his Ethan Hunt character (the series will likely continue without him). So there’s extra incentive for audiences to watch this next installment since the Hunt character has been around since 1996.

We also need to mention the prior film, Mission Impossible — Fallout, earned the highest domestic gross of the entire series at $220 million. So there's evidence this Cruise effect has been building and isn’t a flash in the pan with Top Gun which was making a 30-plus-year return.
