Every year, there’s a bet available on which movie grosses the most money at the box office. And every year, it becomes increasingly lucrative to get it right. That’s why we’re picking the top-grossing 2023 film right here — a bet we’re confident will have you cashing out on January 1, 2024.
Let’s start with the movie betting odds as of today. Here are the movies with the best chances at finishing number one overall, per the most-used entertainment betting sites:

Best Bets To Become 2023’s Highest-Grossing Film In US
We’re going to lay two different bets on 2023’s highest-grossing film, which we’ll explain as we get to them. However, our first choice is an obvious one:
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Ah yes, we’re going with the betting favorite in this one. However, picking Guardians isn’t exactly a slam-dunk choice — not if you look at history, both recent and over the years.
You see, for all of Marvel’s dominance at the American box office, it’s not led to many No. 1 grossers in a single year. Since 2010 (when the Cinematic Universe was already in progress), only four MCU movies — The Avengers, Avengers: End Game, Black Panther, and Spider-Man: No Way From Home — reached the top ranking in a single year. And even pre-2010, only two Spider-Man movies ever achieved that feat for Marvel. Therefore, history is against Marvel here.
Not only that, but MCU is amid a cold streak. Audiences have not responded well to the MCU Phase 4 and 5, with the most recent one — Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania — being dubbed the worst one yet. Box-office numbers are still high, but they’re in a downtrend compared to the past movies. So the question becomes, how can the next Guardians movie turn things around?
Welp, most of all, because this film is being marketed as a finale. A send-off not only for the band of misfit characters but also for the series creator, James Gunn. He’s overseeing the revamp of DC’s superhero franchises and that makes any future collabs with Marvel a no-no. Movie fans love “final hurrahs” (case in point: Infinity War) and this next Guardian movie is effectively that.
If there’s one movie that can overcome the MCU burnout, it’s this one. The characters are as beloved as any in the Marvel cast. The prior two movies were blowout successes and we expect that to continue with the concluding Vol. 3. Bank on this bet, but do leave room for an alternative bet, which we’ll get to below.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One
This movie marks the seventh installment of the Mission Impossible franchise. We think it’s a sneaky choice in this bet because of the “Tom Cruise Effect.”
Whereas Marvel is cold, Cruise is red-hot. This will be the famed actor’s first film since the incredible success of Top Gun: Maverick, which earned the No. 1 spot at the 2022 box office. It was also Cruise’s first-ever billion-dollar grosser globally. While Cruise has always been a star, his appeal has grown in turbulent times. Something about his daredevil ways (CGI be damned) and non-political ways that has hit a chord with American audiences as of late.
Plus, Dead Reckoning will also have the send-off quality of Guardians. Cruise has confirmed this one, as well as Dead Recking Part Two (to be released in 2024), will be the finale for his Ethan Hunt character (the series will likely continue without him). So there’s extra incentive for audiences to watch this next installment since the Hunt character has been around since 1996.
We also need to mention the prior film, Mission Impossible — Fallout, earned the highest domestic gross of the entire series at $220 million. So there's evidence this Cruise effect has been building and isn’t a flash in the pan with Top Gun which was making a 30-plus-year return. That’s why we think it’s worth betting on, especially at these super-long odds. Even a small bet can pay out big time so it’s worth taking a chance on.
