Michael van Gerwen (+275) is the favorite to win the 2023 German Darts Championship starting in Hildesheim on Friday. But MVG will have stiff competition from Luke Humpries (+500) and Dave Chisnall (+1400). In our latest darts betting picks, we look ahead to the competition and name our best bets to win the final event on the 2023 PDC European Tour roster.
- What; 2023 German Darts Championship
- Where; Halle 39, Hildesheim, Germany
- When; Friday, October 13th - Sunday, October 15th, 2023
Yes, this is the thirteenth and final event of the 2023 PDC European Tour. At the end of this event, the 32 players with the most points qualify for the lucrative 2023 European Championship, to be held in Dortmund at the end of the month.
As the top points scorer on the tour this year, Dave Chisnall is the top seed to win the event. Chisnall already has three wins on the European Tour this season, and if he wins this, he will ensure he finishes the season ranked number one on the European Tour of Merit.
The main threats to Chisnall should come from the new World Grand Prix champion, Luke Humpries, and the former world number one and three times World Champion, Michael van Gerwen.
Underlining the strength of the PDC, current World Champion and world number one, Michael Smith is also present this week, as are Rob Cross, Peter Wright, Josh Rock, Nathan Aspinall, and Jonny Clayton.
2023 German Championship Format
The tournament format sees 32 players meet in the opening round on Friday. The winners of those matches head to the second round, where they will meet one of the 16-seeded players.
The 16 seeds sit out the first round which is made up of a combination of players from across the PDC. These players include host nation invites, as well as players like Chris Dobey who haven’t secured enough European Tour ranking points across the season to be seeded.
The first three rounds and the quarter-finals are all played over the best of 11 legs. The semi-finals are over the best of 13 legs, and the final is the best of 15 (first to eight).

Why MVG is worth Avoiding
Michael van Gerwen is the obvious choice to win any darts competition, but we find these days he is just too inconsistent to pick.
When MVG performs to his best, he usually wins. He is quick enough to usually point out that the other guy only won because he didn’t play to his potential. And as annoying as that can be, he does have a point, as he generally does win when he plays well.
MVG was dumped out of the recent World Grand Prix in just the second round. It would be no shock to see him win in Germany. But we are not backing him. He’s too short in the betting and too much of a risk.
Our Picks to Win
Instead, we are hedging our bets on Luke Humpries (+500) and Dave Chisnall (+1400). At those odds, we are in the money if either player wins. And there are good reasons why either player could win.
Let's start with Luke Humpries, who is in the form of his life. He can top the European Tour Order of Merit with a win this weekend, and he is also fresh from winning the 2023 World Grand Prix last Sunday.
Now, onto Dave Chisnall and why he can win this weekend.

Chizzy has already won three times on the European Tour. He has been going through a bit of a renaissance in recent months, and although he hasn’t borne any PDC Major titles, he does lead the European Tour of Merit.
Chisnall will not want to lose the top spot to Luke Humpries at this late stage of the season. And with three titles in the bag, why not a fourth?
