Milan San Remo Cycling Odds

The Milan-San Remo or the ‘Spring Classic’ as it’s commonly referred to as is an annual 298 kilometer (185.2 miles) cycling race in Northern Italy that takes place between Milan and Sanremo. The Milan-San Remo is the longest professional one-day race and the first major classic race of the year and usually is held on the third Saturday in March.

The first Milan-San Remo was held in 1907, making it even older than the oldest Grand Tour. 110 editions of the Spring Classic have been held, only having two years where the race did not go on – World War I and World War II. The 2020 event was nearly cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but was luckily rescheduled for August 8th, 2020.

The route is mostly on flat terrain and is a straight line from Milan to San Remo. The route heads through about 20 Italian towns and doesn’t encounter an incline or climb until about the 140th kilometer in Passo del Turchino. The next climb is 22 kilometers from the finish, with the Poggio di Sanremo being the final climb, five kilometers from the finish.

Single-day races are essentially tests of endurance for the riders, and to start the season off with the longest race of the year can be gruelling on a rider. The fastest sprinters frequently do best at the Milan-San Remo, but the final climbs can ultimately make or break a rider’s chances of winning.

Italian riders dominate this course with 51 wins, followed by Belgium with 20 and France with 14. There surprisingly has only been one Italian cyclist win in the past ten years, considering Italy dominated this race for decades.

With such a renowned and historical single day race, it’s quite obvious that sportsbooks jump at the chance of offering cycling odds for the Milan-San Remo. While all of the favored riders are pretty much neck in neck at the top of the board, if you feel that Mathiew Van Der Poel is a good choice you could get some great value at +800, you can place a $100 wager on him that could pay out $900. If you feel like an underdog like the previous champion Vincenzo Nibali could be the victor, you could cash out a $5100 payout on a $100 wager if he does win the Milan San-Remo.

Top 3 Finish

The top three finish wager allows a small margin of error if you aren’t sure that your favorite cyclist will win outright. If you aren’t sure if they’ll win overall, but could do very well at the Milan San-Remo and may place in the top three, you can place that wager with reduced odds. This can be a smarter option as your rider only has to place in the top three for your bet to cash.

Top 10 Finish

This Milan San-Remo betting type is the same as the top three finish above, but you get even lower odds and your rider just has to place within the top ten.

Moneyline (vs the Field)

If you’re familiar with golf betting, you may be aware of betting against the field. Some sportsbooks offer moneyline odds on each rider and their odds versus the field. You basically are wagering on that rider, versus anyone else in the race. Choosing the field is pretty risky as you will see odds like -1000 or more on the field to win.
