2022 Paris-Roubaix Picks; Van Der Poel To Hot To Ignore

We are now in the prime time of the cycling Classics race season. The Monument races are the standout events that the big names want to win, and Paris-Roubaix is another of those iconic races that any rider would want to have on his/herself Resume.

This year's race is back in its usual spring slot, having been put back to October in 2021 due to the pandemic. Even now it's not without incident. The race was originally scheduled for Sunday, April 10th, but due to French elections, it has swapped dates with the Amstel Gold Race, and Paris-Roubaix 2022 is now taking place on Sunday, April 17th.

This schedule change could play into the hands of Tour of Flanders winner, Mathieu Van Der Poel. The extra week gives him more time to recover from the punishing cobbles, giving him a better chance of becoming only the thirteenth men's rider to win both cycling Classics.

Paris-Roubaix Betting

That man, Mathieu Van Der Poel is a favorite again. Since returning from injury, Van Der Poel has performed out of this world. The Dutchman has won a stage at the Coppi e Bartali, the Dwars door Vlaanderen one-day race, and the Tour of Flanders.

For good measure, he also finished third in the Milan-San Remo, in what was his comeback race after six months out with an injury. In the latest cycling betting oddsVan Der Poel is +250 to win with BetUS and +325 with BetOnline. I'm sure I know which price will disappear first!!

According to the betting, Mads Pederson and Wout Van Aert are Van Der Poel's main rivals. Mads Pedersen has this week won two of the first three stages of the Circuit Cycliste Sarthe. The Danish sprint king is a best price of +400 with BetOnline and is +350 with BetUS.

Wout Van Aert is also in the mix with the best online betting sites, but I would exercise caution when it comes to betting on the Belgian. Van Aert missed the Tour of Flanders with Covid-19 and has been advised to skip this race by medical experts.

Even if he makes the starting line, there must be enough uncertainty surrounding him to make placing a wager on him a touch too risky. Van Aert is +425 with BetUS, and +400 with BetOnline.

Outside of those three, there is a gap in the odds, with Christophe Laporte at +1200 and Stefan Kung at +1600

2022 Paris-Roubaix; All You Need To Know

The 2022 Paris-Roubaix is the third Monument race of the cycling season. It is widely regarded as the most recognized race in cycling after the Tour de France, which by default makes it the premier one-day cycling road race.

The race is known by several names, such as the Queen of the Classics, The Easter Race, or more ominously, The Hell of the North. Last year's winner was Sonny Colbrelli of the Bahrain Victorious team. The Italian rode to a grueling victory in awful conditions on what was his debut in this race. If you think that has sports betting potential to happen again, Colbrelli is +1400 to repeat the win this year.

  • Race; Paris-Roubaix Date; Sunday, April 17th, 2022
  • Start; Compiègne (North of Paris)
  • Finish; Roubaix Velodrome
  • Distance; 275km (55 pavè)
  • Time; 5.15 am ET

Don’t be put off by the start time. The race lasts around 5 to 6 hours, so early risers will catch at least the last half of the race.

Paris-Roubaix Betting Picks

It's not just hard to ignore the favorite Mathieu Van Der Poel; it's impossible! The Dutchman has been phenomenal since his return from injury. Van Der Poel is just performing on another level.

I was surprised to see him win the Tour of Flanders, having just returned from injury and having ridden in quite a few events in the build-up to that race. That didn’t affect him negatively, and I’ve been left with no option but to back Mathieu Van Der Poel to win again.

Value Picks

For a bit of extra value, I’m also going to place small wagers on a couple of outsiders. The first rider I’m going for is Filippo Ganna of Ineos Grenadiers. The Italian has all the tools to win this race. He’s yet to win a Classic of this stature, but this season he’s shown he has the sort of all-round ability to win this race, and at +2800, I think Ganna is worth a small wager.

Also in with a chance is French sprinter Christophe Laporte. The Jumbo Visma rider managed a respectable ninth in the recent Tour of Flanders and has been in decent overall form this season. Before the Tour of Flanders, Laporte won a stage in Paris-Nice and finished second in both the E3 Saxo Bank Classic and Gent-Wevelgem. At +1200 I’m having a small side wager on Christophe Laporte.
