2023/24 Big Bash League Cricket Betting Futures and Picks

The 2023/24 Big Bash League starts later this week, with the Perth Scorchers (+260) looking to win the competition for the third year in succession. Perth is the clear betting favorite with the bookmakers, and in our latest cricket betting tips, we tell you if they are going to pull off the three-peat.

  • What; 2023/24 Men’s Big Bash League (also known as BBL|13)
  • Where; Australia
  • When; December 7th, 2023 - January 24th, 2024
  • Defending Champions; Perth Scorchers

The big cricket competitions are coming thick and fast. The Australian national team has barely finished celebrating their 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup win, and already they’re into their premier domestic T20 competition.

Eight sides will be battling it out in total. Along with the Perth Scorchers, there are the Adelaide Strikers, Brisbane Heat, Hobart Hurricanes, Melbourne Renegades, Melbourne Stars, Sydney Thunder, and Sydney Sixers.

As well as being the defending champions, the Perth Scorchers are also the most successful franchise in the competition's history, with five wins. The Scorchers are followed by the Sydney Sixers, who have three wins.

Between the Scorchers and the Sixers, they have dominated this competition. More so in recent years, where they have won the last four. The Sixers went back-to-back in 2020 and 2021. Then, just as the Sydney franchise looked set to dominate, the Scorchers won it in 2022 and 2023.

This year, Perth is going for the three-peat. So what are their chances?

Scorchers looking good for the three-peat

The Scorchers have consistently been the best all-round team in the Big Bash League for the past two seasons. Their Optus Stadium home wicket is known for pace, bounce, and trueness, and the Scorchers consistently select players that perform well on such surfaces.

In the batting department, they’ve added England star Zak Crawley to their squad this year. Crawley perfectly demonstrated how he could play pace on fast true wickets in the recent Ashes series, and although those wickets weren’t as quick as the one at the Optus Stadium, he looks perfectly suited to play in this team.

The Scorchers also have World Cup winners Mitchell Marsh and Josh Inglis, along with 2021/22 BBL Final match winner Laurie Evans.

With the ball in hand, the Scorchers can call on the services of the pace duo of Jhye Richardson and Andrew Tye. The pair have proved too much for opposition batting lineups in the past. Keeping them both fit will be key to the Scorchers’ chances of success.

Can anyone stop Perth?

The most obvious team with a chance of stopping the Scorchers is the Sydney Sixers. The Sixers have kept together the majority of the squad that has performed so well for them over recent years, and who also know how to win this event.

Availability will be the key to their success. The Sixers have picked up English youngster Rehan Ahmed, and he could be a match-winner if he comes off. The problem is he may miss most of the competition due to international call-ups.

The same will apply to Australia’s Steve Smith. Despite this, the Sixers still look the best bet to prevent the Scorchers from winning a third title.

Outside Bet

The Melbourne Renegades have been truly awful at times in recent years. For three successive years from 2019/20 to 2021/22, they finished bottom of the table, but last year they were a credible third.

They were some distance behind the Scorchers and the Sixers at the top of the table, but the previous years of investment in youth finally seemed to be paying off.

The Renegades still have a long way to go to close the gap on the top two franchises, but their revival started last year and looks set to continue in the 2023/24 competition. At +900, the Renegades represent a good value small outside bet.
